It works pretty well, cheap, paint doesnt bleed through but tears easily...

A couple of questions regarding the decal printers -

What did he hit you up for cost wise?

How is the fine detail in their print?
Hey, I had a price of 30 euro from a printer in spain using the same equipment & this was still cheaper! he charged me $40NZD(So thats about the cost of a coke in Oz with our terrible exchange rate...)
for a full A4 sheet, & it was full, vector file was 23Mb & i didnt leave much space between logos. The sheet is also pre primed with decal spray so you can cut & apply straight away. Its best to get white shapes printed & then apply the decal down over coloured surfaces etc.
As for the detail, its better than i expected, Its not Cartograph quality but it is pretty damn good! my iPhone doesnt take the best macro shots so hard to show detail.

Re: BMW E30 315i Racer

Hey Guys

Its been a while since my last update but ive finally managed to make some inroads!
Firstly - after almost 3 months my Paint finally arrived! (I miss the good olde days when Hiroboy.com would airmail paints directly)
& to my surprise its a 2 part colour! Solid groundcoat & metallic pearl base coat!

Solid Groundcoat only

Metallic Pearl Basecoat (Bad lighting sorry)

Body is almost finished with its colour coats, just gloss black this weekend before getting a prelimary Clearcoat. The colour has come out looking really nice & im rather happy with it!

The underside of the chassis got a colour coat before it gets some weathering

& I pieced the Rollcage back together & painted it (this time without dropping it...)

The "Floor Mats" are ready for their coat of Ali

Also the Wheels are ready for paint too. I added a centre spindle & nuts to better replicate the 1:1

The brakes that came with the Wheel set were too big & had clunky large drilled disks so found a set of brakes from a Ferrari 550 & slotted them to suit. much better! & much much better than the nonexistant BMW kit brakes!

Thanks for Looking, will be getting the black on body this weekend & some other parts will come together!
Ash

Nice! The paint looks great. I didn't know that HiroBoy shipped to NZ. I thought it was a euro only. Looks like I'll get my 787B paint from him.

Re: BMW E30 315i Racer

No they still dont, but Spotmodel.com has them & does ship internationaly, but the risk is up to you! They also do custom orders like mine & dont seem to charge too much extra for it. But expect it to take awhile, I ordered at a bad time, they both went on Holiday at similar times & delayed it...

Re: BMW E30 315i Racer

Hey Guys

Great weather over the weekend so managed to get some paint down.
Its finally starting to look complete

Tried to get a shot in the fading sunlight

But im kicking myself, after removing the masking I missed a bit!!! & only after Id just finished cleaning out my airbrush So will have to get that painted before the clearcoat!

The Wheels & interior parts all got a nice coat of Gloss Ali

And Finally, couldnt resist putting the wheels under her whilst drying above the fireplace! Starting to come together!!!

Will be Clearcoating this weekend & then Ive even got a week off work so will get the signwriting done & some other bits & pieces!
Cheers
Ash

Hey GTRfan, I simply used superglue to hold the cage together, i did consider soldering it which would be stronger but being small i found the superglue was pretty quick & painless.

Update Time!

Had a week off work so managed to get some real progress done!!

Finished the black off completely this time... & clearcoated

& started in on the signwriting which was a lengthy process as most decals have a base layer then the top layer.

Also weathered the chassis ready for detail painting

Decals Clearcoated

Heres a closeup of the body colour, It looks great, colour is a little overexposed in this pic.

Also got a few other minor parts ready too, now just need Semi Gloss Black & chrome on the body.

Thanks for looking!

Hey Ash
The build looks awesome
How did you find the decals? did you need to use any solvents etc?

Thanks!
The decals were pretty good to deal with, I did do a test on another build before i applied these ones just incase & to get familar with how they feel.
They dont take much more than a dip in water to seperate from backing paper, they are pretty strong considering too!! I tried to tear one & took more effort than i thought it would, the one issue i did incounter with the decals is they tend to fold down on themselves & become difficult to seperate, so I'm glad i did a test on another build first so i was prepared for that when it came to the Beamer. Was very glad I doubled up on the decals. & if your doing some its best to do 2 layers esp with white, makes it alot crisper too!
The decals do need to be handled with kid gloves though, I damaged the black on a few decals with my fingernails & also a steel rule. Oh thats the other thing, every decal needs to be trimed around closely as theres no carrier film overtop, that took Hours!!!

Re: BMW E30 315i Racer

Hey Guys

Small update just been working on the interior & mounting wheels etc

Heres the Chassis with some detail painting done, as you can see at the rear theres only a tube molded to the chassis to hold the wheels on. As this kit didnt come with any brakes or suspension detail at all I had to fabricate up some simple mounts (which I forgot to get a photo of)...

Most of the little parts are ready to be installed

Everything is starting to come together & now come the fun part, piecing it all together.

Ash
