Your camera is focusing on the background, and not on the model.
If it has an "Auto" mode shoot in that, dont use any Zoom, and make sure the model is well centered. If that dosnt work, then find the camera manual and find out how to change the focul depth for shooting objects at close range. If it cant be adjusted, then try shooting inside with a totaly white background. (a blank piece of paper is perfect) What model Camera are you useing?
