keep in mind that the grey interieurcolor is not original, but after or from a rebuild 917 original they would not paint these areas (weight reduction=safing fuel) and would be the brownish yellow color of glassfiber |

Re: Porsche 917 Long Tail 24h Le Mans 1970 #3
Hi everyone...
Ok, i have to say sorry for my long absent here. I had hard times in my life to be solved first, so i had to make decitions what is priority. I have worked the last 2 months on this project and it is finished already, but i have make a lot of pictures and thats why i will just continue the thread where i stop before. For me it is also important that the peoples here will learn something. Ok, the first thing i had to do is cleaning all the body parts from dust... ![]() I have decided to make everything open on this model which is possible and i also decided to make evrything dirty and used, for me the model looks more as a real car like this. Another problem was about the interieur, in the build plan it is written to paint it gray. But i have some pictures from this car where you can see all is Fiberglas. Soi decided to make it more difficult to build and choose the fiberglas Version. I was never really shure that this car was really painted gray inside during the race, but after the build i got some pictures from a friend which proof that the car was gray painted. ![]() ![]() ![]() As soon as i found the other pictures with the gray interieur at race time i will post them here. ok, when i restarted the build i did not make so many pictures i just start where i start. With the engine. I added many many parts which i saw on the pictures of the original engine i have. So i did not count exactly the parts, but for shure they are all together more than 500 parts, amazing. Already the engine is like a complete kit. ![]() For the fiberglas i used valejo colors dry brush with diffrent light brown flesh colors, MIG rust washing and also pergament white of valejo, there are many step to make until i got the result i want to have. ![]() This is the first washing step. Just that you have not to ask, yes you are not drunk, i make 3 engines at the same time. 1 for the model a second one for the enginestand and the 3, for the Sunoco 917/30 Can am. Here ist the 917/30 engine. ![]() Accelerationsystem instaled. ![]() Starting with the cables. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Also the normal engine. ![]() Here you can see the fiberglas paintjob better. ![]() Ok, it will continue soon... Happy modelling. |

Re: Porsche 917 Long Tail 24h Le Mans 1970 #3
Next one...
More cables add. ![]() ![]() You can see some parts i add to connect the cables. ![]() Here some very smal golden rings from MIG. ![]() Even for the camera it was maybe difficult the parts are so small. ![]() Here you see where the rings are placed. ![]() At the end i used dark earth wash from MIG. to make them used. ![]() All the engines are finished. ![]() ![]() Gearbox and exhausts added.. ![]() ![]() Chassis frame i paintes semi closs black. ![]() Started with the fiberglas paintjob in the cockpit and the body parts. As you can see ebgine is alreade fixed. ![]() Between i always check if the parts match. ![]() Looks good. Also the body parts with the basic light brown flesh color from valejo. ![]() After i lighted up with a lither brown also from valejo and then used the Rust washing from MIG. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the thing is used. ![]() After the washing was dry, i light it up again with a very light yellow brown and at the end with pergament withe, only very light dry brush. Amazing effect, what is possible just with colors. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another small parts session. ![]() Fuel and oil tanks installed. ![]() ![]() Pedals. ![]() ![]() For the brake discs i used photo each parts not the brake discs from the kit. ![]() ![]() A little chaos on the working place. ![]() Painted some other small parts. ![]() Painted frame parts inside the body parts and add some other parts. ![]() Small parts add decals. ![]() Installed some parts in the cockpit, the seat is just a check for match. ![]() With body. ![]() Starting with detailling the hole thing. ![]() Making lines for the brakes. The messing tubes are from Lion Roar. ![]() ![]() Another camera problem because its so small. ![]() This is the result. ![]() Continue soon..... |

Re: Porsche 917 Long Tail 24h Le Mans 1970 #3
Fantastic work and great detail, wonderful!! bravo!!
Please take this observation well meaning, as suggestion to improve on your fine model The small bands holding the tube frame to the floor, are actually fiberglass bands glued by resin in place on real car In your reference photos they show grey only because the whole interior was painted grey paint at some point over the bare fiberglass areas In your model, bands show different coloring (silver) from bare floor coloring, so your bands painted look like tape, and not the fiberglass bands they actually should be Perhaps might look better to be matched to same coloring as bare floor? Again, love the workmanship, really great! ![]() edit: Hard to find photo of bare floor example, here is a great set of videos of a 917 restoration, and some images I mean contained within ![]() http://shelf3d.com/Search/PORSCHE%2B...92601BAF55BA8C |

Re: Porsche 917 Long Tail 24h Le Mans 1970 #3
@Midmazar
The kit is arround 280 Euro. @Jeremy Jon Thanks for the tip. There are many things i would make diffrent today because every day i am learning more about the 917 cars. But the model is already finish for arround 1 1/2 months. i just post here my pictures from the build. Today i also got pictures from the race at Le Mans 1970 where i can see that this car was painted gray inside the cockpit and also in the engineroom. But i have postet pictures where you can see this car totaly fiberglas. So it is not completely wrong. I have always this luck that i get the correct pictures when the build is done already, even if i searched many hours before. I can live with this. At my build time i had the choice to make it gray or fiberglas. I have pictures of the cockpit with gray color, but i was not able to see if its the Long tail or the 917K which also existe with the same body color. So i decided to make the fiberglas version. where i was shure it is the long tail. By the way, for modelling the fiberglas is more interesting to realise, it was a great experience to learn more about painting technics. Incredible effects are possible. Regards Roger |
