Re: Higher resolution s70/2 photos?
The ITB's (black) under and connected to the bottom of the air intake, do we know what metal they are made of, any facts about materials anywhere?

Those are awesome, THANKS! I really love the one showing the throttle linkage at the back of the engine.

Re: Higher resolution s70/2 photos?
Are you sure we are talking about the same parts? What I'm referring to connects to the engine where plastic would not hold up. I'm referring to the individual throttle bodies of the air intake; they plug into the top of the engine.

Re: Higher resolution s70/2 photos?
I'm talking about the parts these yellow arrows point to. I would put money on them being plastic.
![]() ABS doesn't melt or deform under temperatures below 220F. It would be perfectly acceptable in that position under the air intake box. Every car I have ever owned had an ABS plastic intake manifold that bolted directly to the head, just above or next to the engine block. On the F1 engine they have the benefit of being elevated quite far from the major areas of heat with the true throttle body inlets below them as a buffer from the engine. >8^) ER |

Re: Higher resolution s70/2 photos?
Thanks for the detail regarding the ABS plastic, I wasn't familiar with it.
However, those pieces truly are metal, I had them in my hands, that's why I wanted to know what kind of metal they are. |

Re: Higher resolution s70/2 photos?
Aluminum or magnesium would make the most sense if you are sure they were metal. Still a little odd to hear that.
![]() The Ferrari F50 has a very similar intake design - those exact same parts are plastic and (except for being paired) look nearly identical. There's a thread on FChat with descriptions and photos: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69507 >8^) ER |

Interesting, they look very much the same. I should have said the ones I held were from the intake of the test engine. Perhaps they used metal on that intake and ABS plastic on the final design, but who knows. I'm certain they were metal though. You could be right regarding the final version Erik.

Re: Higher resolution s70/2 photos?
On a non XP roadcar they are definitely plastic. Not physically checked a 95 or 96 GTR but presume they will be the same. a 97 might possibly be different but haven't got one next to me to check

Re: Higher resolution s70/2 photos?
That airbox, looks like the very early type fitted to Edward test mule, interesting to see all the detail changes made to the production version. The carbon air boxes were not made by McLaren, they were made in Germany, by a contractor supplying BMW.
Erik would you be so kind to combine this thread to my Engine thread I started some time back. many thanks in advance. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...ghlight=engine
