Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

This is a better shot of the mount I made for the fans. Again, these are now pushing air in. Still have to wire up and put some sort of rubber between the bar the radiator so it doesn't rattle.

Tonight I painted the strut tower up. Looks great. Did a bunch of touch ups all over the place too. Cleaned the bay pretty good too. Not spotless, but whatever. Still looks great though. Much better than before for sure.

Did bunch of small stuff. Got the throttle body in place. Don't remember what else was done... but it's coming along.

Pulled apart the old motor too. Spun a rod bearing on piston #1. Didn't get the bed plate off yet.

That pusher fan setup should work nicely. My car never overheats despite the huge FMIC. I have just 1 pusher fan on my car and I live in the south, and like I said, never overheats. I could let it idle all day

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

I had the 1 puller fan when I did the turbo setup and I had overheating problems. I also had a leaky head gasket. Don't have the A/C core neither. It would be fine while driving, but if it sat there idling for too long, it would start to overheat in the warm weather. Last time it did that was in MN, and that's when I decided to pick up the second fan. I just feel safer with 2 fans running. Why not, ya know? Should help pull some more air through the FMIC I'm thinking too.

If you notice, I mounted the passenger fan closer to the middle to directly blow on the turbo/manifold to push some that heat out directly. Just have to wire this up and it's ready to go.

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

Got a lot of work done today. Got the old cam-sprocket off the block and the key to go with it and installed on new motor (sorry Jason it didn't come in today... I waited for the mail all day ) That thing is a PAIN IN THE ASS to get on. I did some damage to it and the crank while trying to hammer on. I had to grind down the edges of the crank a little so the UDP could fit on then too Big pain.

Anyways, got the car timed PERFECTLY. So much easier when it's not in the car. Did it in about 5 minutes too. Cranked numerous times and it's dead on.

Got the motor mount and PS mounts and everything on that side too. Right now she looks like this

Checked over all my painting and it looks great. The semi-flat black looks awesome. Did some more touch ups including a bunch of brackets. Couple more to go.

Wow, everything looks great man. The motor is beautiful. The only thing I can critique.....I think you could have spent a little more time making the strut tower repair look a little better.

Should have taken a grinder to the welds that were stickin up and then filled any pinholes with jbweld. That's how I got mine to look so smooth in the end.

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

Thanks for the words gentlemen.

I did take the grinder to the welds. Because of the big grinder wheel it was hard to get to some areas. I did that between welds, and it started making the metal thin and causing some issues. I actually realized after I started painting it that I could use JB Weld. I some a little to the crease on the bottom, but not a whole lot to see if it would work. I was thinking about going back and redoing that.

Brian, I was trying to see how yours turned out but your thread has no pics in it anymore so.... ya know.

Will be picking up a new alternator this week. Not going to fight with an old one anymore. This one is out... so it's getting replaced.

Here's the plan for this week....
-Finish MegaSquirt (Jason, still need those maps)
-Work on strut tower little more
-Pick up 1000cc fuel injectors (probably overnight them)
-Last of fuel lines are on back-order so will use the rubber for now.
-Finish some other wiring (sender units/gauges)
-Drop motor in Saturday & hook everything up (FMIC, wiring)
-1st STARTUP SUNDAY (10/25) !!!!

So this week I'll be spending some more time at the garage than usual probably everyday finishing it all up. I need all your prayers, hopes, & wishes that this thing starts up and runs. I'm excited.

Looks awesome Dave. So you used your old pulley? It should be fine, the timing belt runs a few mm away from the edge. Ill get that map to you this week Dave. When is the start up date planned? You can always work on the strut towers some more after the motor is in and running.

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

Hmm, Ive never used JB weld as a filler, so it sands easily? Also, another thing you could try is a product by Permatex (located in the section with all the silicones), its a metal filler, thats supposed to be easy sanding, and finish nicely prior to paint. A guy I know used it on the cowl panel of his classic camaro he was restoring and it turned out nicely.

Wow, motor looks good. I feel like all the non-turbo to turbo guys are making strides and us stock turbo guys are getting left in the dust lol I'd better get on that. Must be wonderful to have the tools/expertise to get the motor out of there and get lots of work done.
