Disaster!

So, disaster struck the WilliMotorsport miniature shop floor today.

The S2k, almost done. So close. Needs: side windows, exhaust system, some engine wiring, and metal transfers. That's it. Nothing else.

Except for a new paint job.

Seriously.

I was attaching an antenna to the roof, in the middle right in front of the break like for the trunk. I decided I didn't like it. I took it off. I wanted to remove the glue residue. So. I went at it with nail polish remover.

What kind of messed up crack was I on? I know better than that. I mean, duh, nailpolish remover is made to remove... nailpolish... a lacquer. My car was painted in what? Automotive lacquer. Duh. I knew better. I knew better!!! What was I thinking?? Any where, here's the damage.

So.

I am hoping, hope upon hope, that I will be able to mask off the rest of the car, spray the mistake, clear it, and polish it all out. It should work, right? 'Cause I can't repaint the whole thing. This is it....

It was one of those days that I was glad I don't have any kids in the house: my apartment was overflowing with scores of expletives at impressive volume.

Cry.

AHHHHH, that seems like something I'd do. Make a mistake, even though I know better. I think you can mask it though, it's only a little spot.

how terrible! it should work as long as the masking tape edges are in non-obvious places... hope all goes well :\

Throw another coat or two on the whole car and you probably won't be able to see it!

i'm sorry to hear that. it looks beautiful still! from the looks of it, you can probably get away with first polishing out that area then respraying the affected area only with color then clear. i wouldn't mask the area as metallics would build up at the masked edges and you would definitely be able to see where the masked area was after you're done painting. you'd want to feather and blend the new color with the area just barely outside the affected region and clear over the fresh paint only. follow up with colorsand and polish and no one would be the wiser. i've been able to save a few finishes that way and i hope it works for you as well.

Re: Custom Contest entry: S2000 Fastback progress

Sorry to hear 'bout this.. I was looking forward to seeing this one done soon.

That's gonna be a tough respray.

If you can use the panel lines as a masking point you might save yourself the headache of a strip and repaint. That way there's no heavy paint line to sand and try to polish out.

Using the panel lines as markers could ruin the project. I have seen people repaint sections like that and the paint is different shades.

I say just repaint the whole thing, sadly.

Re: Custom Contest entry: S2000 Fastback progress

Use Krystal Klear or other type water based glues to glue things like side mirrors, antennas and clear parts to the body. This will eliminate disasters like this from happening.

Re: Custom Contest entry: S2000 Fastback progress

Veyron - I know! It was just a temporary and insane lapse in judgement. Well, mirrors and windows I use epoxy, but headlamps, tallamps, antennas, I use white glue. Usually.

It's too late to repaint the whole car, so I am going to repaint just a the roof panel. At least, I'll do that first and if it doesn't work I'll repaint the whole thing. The way I see it is if the patch doesn't work, I'll end up doing the same amount of work in the end, but if it does, I can save a lot of time. I'm going to mask it along the leading edge of the roof, over the top of the windows, around the trunk, and use the fold betwen the side windows and the trunk line to hide the break there. However, that's just for overspray, I'm also going to mist it and blend it like appleseed suggested.

Yecchh! I am so stupid.
