1972 Rocket 350 Olds

Hi guys,
This is my first post and hope to get some answers.
I have just rebuilt my first rocket 350. It is a 1972 Delta 88 Royale, I st the cam and crank @ 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock. I contacted my machine shop that did the milling work and they advised resetting and put at 12 o'clock and 12 o'clock. Rebuilt Quadrajet.
The engine ran horrible at first setting and after changing the cam and crank it is the same. I have 150 lbs of compression in all 8 cyls. The engine needs a shot of fuel to even start. I have the plugs gaped @ .40 per manufacture. I have new wires, rotor, plugs and cap. I have spark in all 8 cyls. It runs like it is hitting on about 5 cyls, The timing mark couldn't be viewed with 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock At 12 o'clock and 12 o'clock I did get a timing mark with a timing light at high idle in the viewer.. The engine is fresh and has zinc in the fresh oil. I am lost. Any ideas. No knocks or bad noises just runs horrible. Thanks for any help.

From here, this is tough to offer any meaningful help. Assume it is a misfire condition? Closely recheck the firing order, check for spark on every plug wire, check point dwell, check base timing, check for major vacuum leaks, all diagnostic basics.

Re: 1972 Rocket 350 Olds

Keep in mind that distributor rotation on this year Olds 350 is CCW.

One other note: Putting the crank dot at 12:00 and cam dot at 6:00 is written that way to make it easier to get the can aligned with the crank. The thing is that this position has #6 in the firing position and #1 is in the exhaust position. Turning the crank one full (360*) turn will put both dots at 12:00 and #1 piston at TDC of the compression stroke. Now you can put the dist in and be close to correct initial timing.
