rear alternator bolt

Does anyone have any advice or tricks to get the bolt out that is holding the alternator on? I can't seem to get enough space to do anything with it and I need to get it out

Re: rear alternator bolt

There are two bolts behind the alternator and if you can't find them and get them out, have you thought about how you will get the alternator out after you do get it free? My thought is you need to get more room to work back there. Also, before you remove the left side bolt that's near the serpentine belt, you need to loosen the top manifold bolt it pulls on or the threads will strip.

Take off the windshield wiper bar that's in the way--left side ball joint comes free of the motor cam. Remove the air intake hoses and the MAF sensor and set them aside. Remove the two front engine mount bolts and lift the brackets up out of the way so the engine can roll forward. Block the wheels, put it in netural (battery is disconnected right?). Use a ratchet strap, hook to hole in frame beside driver side A arm under car, run strap up behind bumper, in front of radiator and hook ratchet to engine mount beside throttle cable. Roll engine forward using strap as far as it will go, watching not to crush fans on radiator.
Now you have room. Good luck getting the alternator out of its hole back there. Can you tell I've done this a few times?

Re: rear alternator bolt

As Merc81 says, it's not the bolts(one fron , two rear) that's the problem, it's having the room to remove the alternator.......removing the wiper transmission, rotating engine forward, do this....I have seen guys remove the PS pump(not disconnect it, just release pipe clips, and leave pipes attached to the pump, remove pump bolts, and re-position pump out of the way)....have also seen the cradle partially dropped to create room....

Re: rear alternator bolt

I already got it, it was just a pain in the ass to get out since there was barely any room to get a wrench in there

Re: rear alternator bolt

I already had all that stuff off anyways since I was doing the head gasket but I got a short wrench and a 3/8 extension to be able to get it off

Re: rear alternator bolt

Hey there's a thought! Remove the upper intake manifold to make room for the alternator. I wonder if that's easier than dropping the sub frame. . .

I've done so many of these, some have just enough room to get it out, but when I get one that won't come, anymore I just drop the passenger side of the sub frame a couple inchs to make room.

Re: rear alternator bolt

Possibly. But all I know is that it really is in a terrible place
