89 Chevy Corsica Trouble Help

I have a 1989 Chevy Corsica, it will only start when the fan in the engine compartment doesnt come on. If the fan does come on the car will not start. What could be causing this? How can I fix this? Thanks

When you turn your key to on, don't crank, if the fan comes on, does your Check Engine light stay on also?
