Porsche 977 GT3 Cup - "Black Falcon"

Hello,

I will soon start a new project, Porsche 977 GT3 Cup - "Black Falcon":

I will use Fujimi Porsche GT3R kit (It will arrive soon). Most likely, I will not modify the body to make it into a "GT3 Cup" car because of differences that will not be easy to fix (unless if people have any suggestions - they are always welcome!). I will keep it as a GT3R and put Black Falcon Livery.

I will be making my own decal, using the inkjet decal kit from Bare Metal Foil:

http://www.bare-metal.com/Experts-Ch...ecal-Film.html

I've never done this before, so it'll be an experience for me. Again, if you have any suggestions/tips, send them my way please! :-)

I still have not decided whether I will make the VLN livery (image above), or the N24 version:

The differences are mainly some sponsors. If I do make the N24 version, I need to know some of the sponsors that I can't see (because I can't find a reference picture good enough to make out)

If anyone knows what these sponsors are, please let me know!

Ok. Stay tuned. I will post something as soon as I have the kit in hand and start working on it!

Nice project.
I don't know enough of the car to advice you modifications and how to do them to convert the body, but concerning decals I can tell you to specify "photo quality & paper" on your printer to get a better result. I usually let print dry one or two hour then I spray clear from TS-13 can and let dry a few hours.
To avoid dust I put decal sheet printed side Under while drying.

The sponsor decals in the middle you´re searching for might be a b/w version of this:

EDIT:
Found the others, too, i think. Compare to this photo:

These should be the sponsors:

Re: Porsche 977 GT3 Cup - "Black Falcon"

Thanks for everyone's enthusiasms and support!

@DasWiesel: Yes, the front logo is definitely for Bosch, with "WALSRODE" written underneath (If you search for this vehicle on Flickr @tmfepictures, you will find very good hi-res pictures).

I found a couple of missing sponsors on the side:

One is UDIT Logo (right underneath Falken logo):

The other one is right in front of the front wheel. It seems to say "STERN" with smaller print underneath, but I doubt I will be able to print this small text anyway, so I may not even bother with this one.

I am also wondering how to do the metallic yellow stripe in the middle. I will be painting this, but any suggestions on paint colour? Maybe mixing yellow and gold together, would this work?

I'm still waiting for the kit to come, but continuing with the research on the car itself. I think I will end up doing the #56 car driven by Weishaupt, Rosenberg, Plesse and Jahn, which won the SP7 class in 2014 24 hour race.

not a good idea! you need also a WELLY GT3RS. but this is a 997 MK I not a MK II.

Rims are from ScaleProduction: http://www.scaleproduction.de/produc...s-gt3-cup.html

Re: Porsche 977 GT3 Cup - "Black Falcon"

Hello everyone

So I just got the kit in the mail. I roughly put together the pieces to get the overall image.

It seems to be a pretty decent kit, but the wheels don't look even close to the real thing. I don't really want to put too much money into this (so I won't follow the suggestion @FraFi to get a die-cast body, I still appreciate the suggestion though!), so I might go with what I have. I haven't decided yet.

So now that I have the kit in hand, I compared with the reference pictures, and it looks like I will be able to convert this to GT3 Cup car without too much trouble. I've identified what I think are the major differences:

compare with the GT3R:

1. The cup car has lights here. GT3R has extra air vent. Of course I don't have the clear parts for this, so I need to think of what I can do
2. Front diffuser. I can just omit the GT3R diffuser part that came with the kit.
3. Front wheel arch. The cup car has thinner wheel arch than the GT3R
4. Rear wheel arch. The shape of the arch is different between the two cars. I'll have to reshape. I think this will be the hardest part of the project
5. Rear diffuser (or lack thereof for the cup car). Again, I can omit the GT3R diffuser. I'll have to reshape the back-end.
6. The shape of the end plates for the spoilers. This shouldn't be that difficult.

If any of you notice any other major differences, please let me know before it's too late!

Updates to follow soon (hopefully). Stay tuned!

Thanks for reading
~Rick

Re: Porsche 977 GT3 Cup - "Black Falcon"

Hello!

A little update over the weekend.

After thinking a little (actually a lot) more and looking at the kit, I realized I needed several extra parts. So I ordered the following:

1. GT3 Cup Wheels from scale production (as suggested by @FraFi)
2. PE Rear-wing support from scale production
3. PE seatbelt buckles
4. PE Hood pins

I have started the body modifications, but nowhere near complete yet, but here are a couple of pictures to prove that I am working at it:

One part I did complete is the chassis. Because the cup car does not have the extra skid plates that GT3R has, I needed to paint the engine and exhaust systems

The suspension/brakes. The cup cars have red calipers with "PORSCHE" written on them (GT3R has beige BREMBO calipers). The white writing is very crude, but I figured they aren't all that visible.

One other thing is I started playing with the paint to use for the silver/gold of the body. Here is the test:

The silver is Tamiya X-11 chrome silver, and the gold is X-11 chrome silver with a coat of clear yellow. I think the colour is fine, but I think the sparkles are too rough (need smoother finish). I also think the gold is much shinier and more mirror-like finish. See for example:

Does anyone have suggestions on the paint I could use, or how to get the mirror-like finish? Would be much appreciated!

I will continue to work on it and update as I go along. Stay tuned!

~Rick

Hi Rick!

Regarding the yellow-gold color. You could try using clear yellow over Tamiya silver leaf.

See the picture below. The spoon furthest to the left is painted with this combo.

Best Regards!

Emil

Re: Porsche 977 GT3 Cup - "Black Falcon"

A small update today

For the past days (weeks) I've been refining the rear wheel arch. Puttying, sanding, repeat. It's really hard to get perfect, and it's finally to my safisfaction. I think the sponsor decals will cover most of the imperfections (I hope)

The other update is in the interior. It's not finished, but almost there! I'm still missing a few miscellaneous small items (not sure where the radio box goes, trying to find a relevant reference picture), plus seat and finish the rollcage!

This car is turning out to take a lot more time than I expected, and I haven't even started on the decal work! I will continue to work on it and give updates as I have them!

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned!

~Rick

PS - @das_auto: Thanks for the suggestion. I will try the Silver leaf + clear yellow combination. It might be exactly what I need!

Re: Porsche 977 GT3 Cup - "Black Falcon"

Hello,

I have completed the making of the sponsor template. I have not printed on the decal sheet, but printed on the normal sheet of paper to make sure the sizing is correct.

One other minor thing is the cup wheels from Scale Production has arrived. I painted it silver. If you compare with the Fujimi kit wheel (GT3R wheel), it is quite obvious the difference!

That's it for now. Stay tuned, and thanks for reading!

Re: Porsche 977 GT3 Cup - "Black Falcon"

think the original Fujimi idea was to copy something really used on 997´s cars.It come ugly and quite far from the real ones, much nicer and finely mould:

http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/a...ine=1362590023

u did it right. BBS are always much nicer on cars..

Re: Porsche 977 GT3 Cup - "Black Falcon"

Hey guys,

Some updates so far:

Painted the body, using Tamiya Silver leaf (TS-30) and for the gold, I put a layer of clear yellow (X-24) on top. With the black trim around, the paint of the body is done:

Next, I printed a sheet of graphics using a ink jet printer. I needed to separate clear background and white background, because ink jet printers don't print white. There are some duplicates on purpose

I started applying these decals. I am not finished yet, but here is the progress:

One thing I noticed is that if you keep the decals in water for longer than necessary, some ink will start bleeding out while it's drying, like this:

It's too late for this one (the decal is not peelable anymore), but it's something I have to keep in mind as I go along.

That's it for now. Stay tuned, and thanks for reading.

Thanks to everyone who helped me along the way. It was long, but very fun and adventurous journey, and I learned a lot of things from this build
