I've had a bad thermostat and the mileage dropped 50% it acts like a choke is closed and calls for a lot of fuel. You can also have a bad temperature sensor.
Feel the engine radiator hose and you can generally find a bad thermostat.
Use a pressure gage and actually check the pressure.
