child safety locks
This might sound silly, but...
How do you get the rear door child safety locks to disengage?! Tried pushing & pulling the little tiny lever on the edge of the door, but can't get it to move. Which way should it go to, and is it really that hard to flip? Thanks in advance. |

Re: child safety locks
On the ones I've seen it moves up and down, and isn't tough to move.

Re: child safety locks
Maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing, but I don't see anything else it could be.
This is a flat metal tab with rounded corners, and it comes out of a horizontal slot on the edge of the door near the latch. My owner's manual says to "activate the child safety locks by engaging the lock lever" or something to that effect. I just can't get these levers to move, and the manual doesn't say which way to move them. I'm tired of climbing over the seats to get out; does anyone have any ideas? |

Sorry, I must have had the wrong design in mind. So you've tried to push, pull, move L&R and U&D. Hmm

Re: child safety locks
I knew it was a dumb question.
That was the right lever, it just required a lot of force (ended up using a screwdriver to push with). By the way, it disengages by pushing the lever to the exterior of the door. No more climbing over the seat! |

Re: child safety locks
The watchful eye of a parent is always the best form of security, but it can not be there all the time. Prevention is better than cure, so we compiled the best way to make it easy for you to let your child's safety, you need to cure before. So safety lock are very safer as they are easy and safer.

Re: child safety locks
I was working on a 94 Cherokee whose driver's side back door didnt open from the outside anymore. In taking the inner panel off and squirting oil onto the latch mechanism, i also found it made the child safety latch Much easier to operate. It was just gummed up from all the years of very-little-use. I oiled the other rear door, and its child safety latch also got freed up. Now I can move them back and forth with just one thumb.
If you go to oil things, oil the door hinges too. |

Re: child safety locks
I dont mean to hijack the thread, but I cant get the drivers side rear door open at all. I know its unlocked but neither handle will work. i was thinking the child safety lock, but that wouldnt explain not being able to get IN from OUTSIDE. The button will push in, but no entry. Any ideas on that?

Re: child safety locks
In your situation I would recommend opening the other side rear door, and seeing what it takes to get the inner panel off. If this isnt feasible with the door shut, at least you can look at the latch mechanism on that other door. Its likely one of the control rods has come free of where it fits into the lever on the latch mechanism, and could show you where you could put a thin steel rod down between the lowered window and the rubber, to shove the 'opening' lever. You might need to have some kind of a 'hook' cut into the thin steel rod.
If that isnt workable, you might be able to manipulate the 'child safety' tab through the gap in the door-to-body, once you see where its located on the door that does open. Expect it to be stiff though, from lack of lube and lack of use. I had to fight the Jeep rear door mechanism, as it wouldnt open from the outside, but at least no one had activated the 'child safety' feature, so I could open it from the inside. I had to get a new plastic 'rod retainer' from an auto parts store. In the little bubble packs of Dorman or "Help" products was an assortment of the little rod retainers, and one of them was the right kind. |
