Seized 3.0 1996 Ranger

We just bought this 1996 Ranger for my son's first vehicle, as is, with a non running engine. From what we have discovered on various forums is that the cam position synchro probably went out and took the oil pump with it. Being new to the Ford world (only had GM before) we are concerned with compatability problems with a new (used) engine. Ideally if we could find another one from a 1996 Ranger that would be the best scenario. But in reality we'll have to settle for a different year or different model 3.0 engine. There seems to be a lot of Taurus motors around. These are mounted sideways in the car so will the motor mounts, accessory mounts, sensors etc. be in the same location? If I do find one from a Ranger will the same mounts and sensors be the same from year to year? Is there an interchange manual on these that would have this info? We would like to stay with a 3.0 and make the whole operation as simple as possible as my son will be doing this as an "introduction to Auto Mechanics", so the less complications the better. Thanks in Advance
