Should I replace the ecotec timing chain as precautionary??
Just bought a 02 Grand Am with the the ecotec 2.2L. 166k miles. I have heard the 02 -04 2.2's had timing tensioner/oiler issues causing premature failures and this was corrected by GM in 05. My question is should i replace the chain and related components as a precautionary as i want this motor to run past 200k . Or just keep my fingers crossed it doesnt break. Previous owner said he changed oil every 3k and these are mostly all highway miles. Uses no oil .

That would be entirely up to you. There is a updated design kit for those, GM Part # 12578218. Not ALL of the older style will break, but if you have the time and the resources, it may not be a bad idea. Like I said though, it's up to you. The 2.2L L61 eng is a interference engine, so a broken timing chain will most likley result in damaged valves.

Basically, it doesn't just break.....you will start to hear a knocking noise from the timing cover......problem was the oiler orifice was too small.....the Kit GMtech1 is talking about, I think, has new crank and cam sprockets, chain, tensioner, and oiler orifice.....
Just like anything else, it all depends on the care of the car.....have pulled valve covers off cars, and immediately, you know the vehicle wasn't well maintained, as far as oil changes go.....so if a vehicle didn't have oil changes every 3K, chances are that orifice could eventually start getting smaller as it gums up, and the chain does not get oiled like it should......

Thanks for the replys so far. is it possible to just pull off the valve/cam gear cover and inspect the chain for tension and condition. It looks like the valve cover also covers the cam gears but Ive never worked on a 2.2 before.

I wouldn't do it, unless I was doing a replacement....like I said, it will make a gradual noise in the timing cover, before it breaks.....
