Converting from SOHC to DOHC 2.3L Quad 4
I have a 93 Grand Am with a 2.3L SOHC.
It seems possible to be able to get a Head with a DOHC and a matching timing chain case, then the two over head cams. Am I right on this and if so what kinda power are we adding to the engine when we do this. It just seems to simple to do, has anyone successfully done this? Thanks for any input. |

If I am not mistaken the Block for the SOHC and the DOHC is the same. so you wouldn't be gaining any more than what a stock DOHC would have.

their is way move invaled then just swapping heads. you would have to rework the timing chain new ecm, alot more things, it would be cheaper to find a used 2.3L and throw that in. or while your swaping motors go for the HO motor instead or a nice W41.

He would be better off trying for the HO engine, the w41 is to hard to find, and will be alot more expensive.

or you could sell your car and buy an Achive SCX with the W41. I know of one in NY for $900, all it needs is a new clutch.

Re: Converting from SOHC to DOHC 2.3L Quad 4
Well I already did it i had a single and i converted it to a duel high output with, the single block. But with everything else the HO. I raced my friends stock HO and he spanked me. He runs 9.7, and i run 10.7in the eigth of a mile. It is totally not worth it ,not all that work i put in it i would have rather just went out and bought an Ho for all the money i have put in my grand am....

Re: Converting from SOHC to DOHC 2.3L Quad 4
Old post, but I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Theoretically: The defference between the SOHC and DOHC is about 30 horsepower and they share the same block (I think, nobody cares about the suckers stuck with the SOHC) so you should gain like 30 horsepower. According to what I've read the switch should be fairly easy because all the 2.3L Quads are similar. I'd like to hear from someone who has done it themselves first tho. It would have been nice if chicken said how much it cost/dificulty instead of it's not worth it.

Re: Converting from SOHC to DOHC 2.3L Quad 4
I have a 1999 cavalier...it had a 2.2l ohv motor in it...i bought a 95 cavalier z24 for 500 bucks and swapped it to a 2.3l quad 4... i blew up the quad four... now i found a 2.3 liter sohc in a 93 achieva... could i put my head on the block and stick it back in my car and get back to driving it again? i figure i just have to swap the head and timing cover over... the 93 acheiva motor has 39k on it and will cost me 250... so i think this could be a good deal...i guess i'm more worried about pistion clearance and do the heads match up to the block...
