2005 Cavalier: New starter, new battery... No start!

Ok... I have a 2005 Chevy Cavalier and it wont start. About a week ago I had 2 or 3 instances where when starting I heard a little clank, but the turned over and on I went. Then I tried to start it and had a louder more pronounced clank and then just the starter spinning and no start. I immediately tried again and this time just a spinning noise. The next day to please a friend trying to diagnose I tried again and again I had a louder clank, but this time it was 2-3 clanks and just a spinning sound to follow.

I self diagnose, I need a new starter. Starter arrives, I remove the old and install the new only to find that the battery is dead(drained by teen & a laptop) and wont take a charge. I had the tested it was bad... Replaced.

Now when I try to start it all I get is a single Very well pronounced CLANK.... Please help... I have checked the positive and negative cables and they are good and the car is getting plenty of juice... I have no other clues.

.

By your description, I'm not sure if the eng is even "turning over". When you say a "clank" noise, its just make the noise and wont crank over? If that is the case, you need to see if the eng is locked up. Remove the spark plugs and use either a long handled ratchet or a breaker bar and socket on the crank pully and try and turn the crankshaft a full revolution.
