78'Eldorado Transmisson

78' Eldorado 425 transmission.I replaced the vacum modulator because it was not shifting up into3rd gear until 50-55 mph. When I did that I found a broken wire ,thought it was for reverse lights.Took car for test drive and tranny shifts great. Then I repared the broken wire and took the car for another test drive, transmisson only has second gear,no low or third gear.Found wire was for detent solenoid.I disconnected the wire and transmission shifts good again. What's up with that? Will it damage the transmission if I leave the detent solenoid disconnected? It upshifts and downshifts good when the solenoid is disconnected.Diesel1962

Re: 78'Eldorado Transmisson

Only for kickdown, leaving it off is not an issue.

Re: 78'Eldorado Transmisson

Thank's for reply,Max. I talked to another mechanic at work today and he said that leaving the solenoid disconnected would not harm the transmission. Now am going to replace R.H axle shaft and do some body work.Should be a good car as it only has 66,000 miles on it!Diesel1962
