Ferrari 250 GTO Le Mans 1962 N.A.R.T. (chassis #3387)

Hey everybody,

I will rebuild the Ferrari 250 entered by N.A.R.T. in the Le Mans race of 1962 with the starting number 17. It finished 6th overall. After flooding the board with reference and paint questions it is time to show you the progress I have achieved on this build.

I start with the body since reference shows that there are major differences to the body Fujimi provided in this kit. If you ask me Fujimi simply did the regular body adding the No. 17 decals and white center stripes. And it appears as Fujimi used the rebuilt version of this chassis as it entered in Sebring in the same year. When you research this chassis you will find a lot of pictures like this one:

The first difference is to original car is the rear. This car only had a rear flap. Later on the body was rebuilt and has now the regular 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO rear.

The reference:

The body and its issue:

The solution so far:

I also redid the fuel input system. The reference above clearly shows that the intake was redone into the rear window. It appears as the regular intake was covered with a sticker. I tried to replicate this by filling the spot where the intake uses to be. This part will be covered by a white decal later on resembling the sticker.

Furthermore there are differences in the front of the body as well. There is no brake air intake. The secondary lighting unit is not located at the side of the fender but underneath the front lights.

The reference:

The body:

The solution so far:

Right now I´m working on making room for the secondary lighting unit underneath the front lights. I will post pictures later.

Furthermore the original car had side air intakes behind the doors. It also appears as there was no side rearview mirror.

The reference:

The body:

The solution so far:

I will finish the shape of the intakes just before the body gets its first layer of primer to prevent this part to gather too much dust.

There are several challenges that I need to come to par with.
- First of all there was no rear sticker included int he kit which is shown on the reference above.
- Second of all there is still the color question. Right now I will order the Ferrari color azzuro california metallic (color code 524) which seems as close to me as possible. Fujumi wants us to use a color H-15 which is not even metallic.
- Third the kits rear window has an air outtake which I think there is no chance of getting rid of. I could order a second regular Fujimi kit. But just for arear window would be very costly.

Thanks for looking and I will keep you posted and ask a lot of questions. Promised.

Cheers Robert

Nice to see a new project from you. You did a great job on the rear wing.

Nice start!
Can't you use some clear sheet for the ventless rear window? If the corner radiuses are too sharp you could also try to turn the kit window into the master and form some clear sheet over it using a hot air gun. I've done that in 1:43 at least:-)

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO Le Mans 1962 N.A.R.T. (chassis #3387)

Nice start. I think Fujimi used a replica GTO to do their 250GTO kit. It has some strange problems. I wish they had put the vents behind the side window since most GTO's had them. Also the rear by the tail lights seems to small. Take a look at the photos of a real GTO rear end and compare. I am sure the GTO rear window could be made with flat clear sheet cut to size. It will be much clearer that the kit window. Hobby Design has a really nice phototech sheet that has all the window frames on it. You could use clear sheet for all the windows like they do on BBR kits in 1/43rd scale. Its hard to do but the results are amazing.

By the way, that first GTO photo was taken at Sebring in 2002. They had the car on display during the whole Sebring 12 hour race. They also had a tent full of Sebring winners in 2002.

Nice start! Personally, I think 3387 looks great as it is now, even if not original. I haven't found any pictures of 3387's interior. Have you?

i have some ref pics if you need them let me know!

needless to say i'll be watching this one!

countach79,

I think I read your post on Ferrarichat. Even with the paint code info, its hard for someone to find the formula. I've also found that colors are tweaked to the owners taste during restorations.

The owner of 3387, an investment banker/lawyer, also has one of the original 275 Nart spyders. Must be nice to have such beautiful cars.

The color, Blu NART is the closest to that picture. Scalefinishes.com sells Blu Nart airbrush paint.

Super work up till now Robert

I also think (admittedly, without having seen the kit part) that it shouldn't be too difficult to replicate the rear window with acetate.

Really looking forward to seeing more soon!

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO Le Mans 1962 N.A.R.T. (chassis #3387)

Thank you all for your replies and comments. The most important issue for me right now is: curbside or engine detail. I never have been much of a talented engine detailer. So for now I´m strongly thinking of keeping this one curbside as I did on my 250TR.

@jaykay640, F1Tommy, klutz100: I never did my own windows. Do you any handy thread about the technique and the materials I need. You also said that the best tool used is a hot air gun. You don´t mean a simple hair dryer, do you?

The reference:

The kits item:

@BVC500: I only have interior pictures of other 250GTOs as well as the #3387 as it was sold in red by Michael Sheehan. I bought the neko publishing issue on Ferrari GTOs. There are several interior shots in this nice book. But none is of the chassis #3387. If you have some shots I´d be happy to get a copy of them.

@countach79: I´d like to have some of the reference you offer. Shall I PM you? Regarding the color. I asked an internet dealer to make me a can of this color:

http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Se...ornia-roof-up/

To me it resembles the blue/purple shown in the various reference pictures I have f.ex. above). Since I´m limited to spray paints I have no use for the paints offered by scalefinishes.com. Thank you for the link TestaRossa250.

So help on the window issue as well on the color choice is highly appreciated. For now I leave with the status I´m at right now.

For the first time I build the chassis and see if everything fits properly. My mock up:

As you can see with the left front brake I will be using the Hobby Design detail set as much as possible.

The inlays for the secondary lighting unit:

Last a comparison shot between the kits rims which are very nice. Nevertheless I went for all metal mesh wire wheels.

That´s it for the moment. I will keep you posted.

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO Le Mans 1962 N.A.R.T. (chassis #3387)

Robert,

I did a tutorial HERE on how I replaced the windows in my Dino.
Also, I am pretty sure I replaced the front windscreen in my/our M1 Carte de France HERE

If the shape is too complicated to make out of flat acetate and you want to try the heat forming (smash forming) route, there are a gazillion tutorials on the web if you Google vacuum forming (like this), For simple shapes you don't really need the vacuum, you can pull the heat acetate over the original part (I did this for headlight covers on the Revell 612)

I don't have any good interior pics, just know from a few bad pics that the interior now has black leather quilting on the transmission tunnel and rear parcel shelf. It still has blue seats.

I photo'd the car in 2002 at Amelia Island Concours...which Makes sense that it was at Sebring the following week...Sebring being just down the road from Amelia.

I didn't take any great detailing pics...but here they are.

Thanks Brian! Those pics help a lot. I wonder if the quilting is removable, because I have seen it with quilting on the parcel shelf and transmission tunnel.
