horn/cruise control

I have a 2003 ZX2, I bought the car in May of last year and the horn and cruise control have never worked. Is it possible that they don't work for the same reason? Do they share the same ground or something like that? Regardless, the main thing I want to fix is the horn as I need it so that I can pass the new york state inspection when I register it here in a couple of weeks.

Re: horn/cruise control

Sounds like either the clock spring or a common fuse/ground issue. Have you checked the fuse box? Coud it be that you just have a bad horn and some other issue with the cruise? You can remove the horn from under the hood and jump it from the battery. If it blows, it's good.

Re: horn/cruise control

I have checked the fuses. I have tried to find the actual horn, but I couldn't find it. Any idea where it is physically located under the hood?

Re: horn/cruise control

Since the horn and cruise control utilitze a slip ring connector (clock spring) to operate this is the most common cause of failure of both componsents. I believe the horn is located in back and below the front bumper cover. The clock spring is probably corroded and needs to be cleaned with some fine sand paper....I know you need the horm to pass NY state inspection. I never use mine as I always get flipped off when I do. lol

Re: horn/cruise control

Any possibility of an attempted airbag replacement causing this ?

Re: horn/cruise control

It is possible that the air bag was replaced. It is also possible that there isn't even an air bag in there as I don't trust the place that I bought it from very well. They got it at auction and there definitely was front end damage but I don't know how serious it was.

How would that cause the horn and cruise not to work?

I don't know for sure where the horn is located on the ZX-2, but on my '88 Escort it's located near the front of the caer inside the right fender.

Re: horn/cruise control

With the key on and engine off you should hear a relay clicking when you hit the horn button.
