in 2wd this is no problem...but the front tires should be matched...the rear you can get away with a larger difference in wear..

get some scrap yard tire to match the front tire..

To: j cAT; Even different size rear tires could break the ring or pinion gear if he has a rear locker.

Your welcome. May I also suggest that you change the lube in the Trans. Case again since that grinding likely left metal shavings. Also, if you can find one of those magnetic drain plugs for the Case. Lastly, The proper AMSOIL lube will protect all the parts in T-Case, Tranny, Diffs/Axles etc. I'll send you my Dealer Web address on your email.

the rear wheels with the locker locked would be an issue...the rear diff is normally un locked even in 4wd...unless the rear wheel slips..with a snow condition the size difference probably won't be too restrictive..

since he is in ohio he has a lot of winter to go thru and soon he's gonna use that 4wd as the storm now approches..

as I mentioned in any 4wd position those front axles are locked ..so in auto 4wd those front diff gears are gonna get damaged..as this will not be engaged for a brief period of time like the rear...

in any case he and others that do not practice proper tire rotation and care to this issue will suffer damage to the drive train..

with different tires/treads this is extremely dangerous with a truck/awd vehicle..

I agree with you 100%. The reason I mentioned it is because I broke 2 teeth (tips) of my rear diff. ring gear in the middle of summer! (Spun on some gravel which of course caused the locker to engage). The broken teeth were not close together or completely gone, so I didn't have to reaplace it, just weld the hole shut in my diff. cover. But there was a lot of strain on it since I was running 38.5" Gumbo Monster Mudders.

with these eaton lockers when new they must be properly broke in...that means no hauling or long trips the first 500mi...then after 1000mi you must replace the fluid..this is part of the hardening of the gear teeth...if the teeth get too hot on break in the teeth will crack or fall off...had a guy I know get a new truck and he loaded it up and hauled off to yellow stone...

he learned the hard way..GM is to blame by not insuring that, it is told to the buyer..

Sorry to hear that. Maybe you could sell them using one of those free ads? Back when I bought off road tires, I found I could buy then cheaper from those companies in the 4Wheel & Off Road Magazine. But now days, the price of shipping/freight has gone sky-high. May not be cheaper now.

That's a new one on me, my first time to hear anything bad about the Eaton locker. My Brother has a Chevy Crew Cab 4X4 W/the Eaton, never had any problems. He had LineX sprayed in his bed & started towing camper & hauling heavy loads in the first couple months/800 miles after buying it new.
