Unhappy 98 towncar blower motor

Can anyone tell me where the blower motor is in my 98 towncar?? I can't see it under the hood in the engine compartment so I guess it must be in the dash or under the dash. Sometimes it works just fine and blows cold (or hot) air and then without warning I get nothing. I don't hear it blowing at all. It's not a blend door issue. I'll turn the car off and the next time I go somewhere it blows again so I'm pretty sure it's the motor. Has anyone replaced one of these? Please tell me it's not a dealer item. Thanks

Re: 98 towncar blower motor

I'd suspect the Blower Motor Speed Controller before digging into the Motor.

The controller can be seen with the hood open, mounted onto that side of the HVAC unit, directly behind and inline with the passenger side valve cover. In fact, the valve cover is so close that one controller mounting screw is very difficult to get at with a tool.

A common problem with that controller is; the master resistor that slows down blower gets very hot, and melts the solder that holds it to the controller circuit board. In most cases, a higher temp solder fixes the problem.

I met a guy that had to replace a defective resistor too... He didn't want to put out the $160+ for the Speed Controller, so instead he found a supplier of just the resistor and made it work, that was two years back and still working.

The resistor part was MJ11028 from cpcares.com

Here's a good tech article dealing with replacement of the speed controller.

How did you get WHAT off?

There's plenty of examples in the reply above to answer any " get it off " questions.
A few details about where YOU are in relation to this thread would go a LONG way in determining what you need.

I can't guess what your problem is..
