Let's play name that connector!

I have several electrical, and a few hose-type connectors under my hood that I have no idea what they are supposed to be connected too. If anything.
Vehicle in question is 86 Cherokee, 2.8, auto, 4x4.
Ive taken pictures of them, given them a reference number so you guys can make it easier to tell me what youre talking about.

This one is on the passenger side of the engine bay. Right next too those canister "thingies"

Also on passenger side of engine bay, pops out of the wiring that runs across the top of the bay.

Drivers side of engine bay, for reference you can see the bottom of the washer fluid tank in the bottom left.

Drivers side of bay, thats the coolant overflow lid in the picture.

Drivers side again, pops out of the wire loom running across the top of the bay, similar style to #2

Drivers side again, far upper right corner on the firewall, for reference thats the hood latch release cable running underneath it.

I really appreciate any info I can get on this, Ive scoured what little info I have, and cant really seem to find what this stuff is.

Re: Let's play name that connector!

Hmmm. I'm not that familiar with a 86 V6 but:

#2 could be for the hood light.

#3 - Look down on the engine block. See if you have anything sticking out with matching end on it.

Is #5 a hard line like a brake line?

Your washer tank has 2 pumps so you have (or had) a rear wiper. #7 could be the washer line to the rear hatch.

Re: Let's play name that connector!

See I was thinking #3 is in the right location for what would be the intake air temperature sensor on newer vehicles. Or at least some sort of airflow sensor. Because if the factory intake tube was there (its not) it could easily plug into the bottom or side of it. But the 2.8 doesnt appear to have such a sensor.

I really thought #5 was a brake line as well, but Im almost certain its not. It doesnt come into contact with the master cylinder at all. But it does run alongside the brake lines as it goes out of the engine bay. I cant keep track of it by myself, and have yet to get an assistant to give it a wiggle.

I think you nailed #7 though, it does have a rear wiper, doesnt work, all thats left is the stud the arm mounts on, but its there nonetheless. So that very well may be what its for.

Re: Let's play name that connector!

#6 is more than likely a tach connection for diagnostic purposes ...if you've got a tach/dwell meter this is where you'd make the connection for the tach function. If the vehicle doesn't have a dash tach then this would be the wire loom connection for it.

Re: Let's play name that connector!

sector I stumbled upon that very information last night while I was reading the Chiltons on how to check the timing, etc. It mentioned plugging a tachometer into the harness above the blower motor and a light went off in my head.

Above the blower motor would be #2 I think, I believe the motor is on the passenger side. But I guess its possible that both of those connectors could be, since they look so similar. Now youve gone and done it though, because it seems like its going to be easy for me to add an aftermarket tachometer, which is something Ive been curious about doing anyway haha.

Re: Let's play name that connector!

#5 connects to the fuel vapour collection cannister. I just capped it on my 2.8 V6 cherokee.

#3 is for a throttle kicker. It plugs into a pressure switch on the power steering hydraulic hose. The idea is when you turn the sterring wheel far enough to engage the power steering pump, this switch energises a small solinoid in the carb that increases idle speed just a little, so the PS pump does not stall the engine.

#'s 1,2 & 6 may not hook up to anything. My Jeep had several connectors just like this that were intended for applications or options I did not have. Remember the basic wiring harness was used for the V6 engine, 4 cyl engine and the diesel. They did not bother to eliminate wires if the application did not use them. They just left them, unused, in the wiring harness.

I'll have to look at my Jeep for the others. Most of the unnecessary stuff got tossed out when I turned it into an Edelbrock-powered rocket 20 years ago.

Re: Let's play name that connector!

More info.

#7 is your windshield washer hose, going to the washer nozzles.

I remember playing "name that connector" on a fuel injected model GM2.8 California Emissions Fiero....... *gack* Just about the same engine you have, and the emissions just makes it all that much easier to work on! :P
