WIP 1/24 Hasagawa Joest Porsche 962C

Well this is my 3rd serious build now and after getting very frustrated with the F2001 I've opted for a nice simple kit as a breather. Perhaps I was biting off more than I could chew with the detail on the last kit so I'll steadily add detail on each succesive build from now on. However this one is going to be a nice clean quick one. I'm very busy for the next month so I didn't want something I'd have to put a lot of work into
Also I see someone has started a WIP for the same car but the Tamiya version. Sorry for building the same car but it was next in my queue...
So first impressions of the kit; looks quite good, Hasagawa give you a couple of extra parts to modify the car for various years (the rear wing is the most noticable of these changes) but pictures of the car were very hard to find so I thought I'd just stick to the box instructions. Decals were a little bit yellowed when I bought the kit so they'll be taped to the window for a day or two before I need them which should hopefully cure that problem. Initial test fit looks ok, though the windscreen is going to need some bending back into shape..



So I've taken the body out, sanded off all the mould lines and primed it. Because it's closed body and the only visible part of the inside will be the cockpit I haven't had to putty over the injection mould marks (though I did sand off the Hasagawa stamp from the inside of the roof). Floor was also primed and has been sprayed black. I then masked off all but the dash and the headlights and sprayed those black. Had a little bit of paint run onto the body (though not the place I thought I'd find it - none around the headlights or dash, a little on the front) which I sanded off







Meanwhile I started the cockpit. This was all one piece with the gearstick and seat separate. It was primed and sprayed black. Then masked off for the silver. The seat was then primed and sprayed with a wet coat of black. I then lightly sprinkled some flour over it while it was wet and shook off the excess. When that was dry it received another coat of black giving the material effect. I'm also waiting on some material seat belts.

Looking good; I like the seat texture. I think you'll find all the "glass" is a bit of a tight fit after the paint is on. Though simple the Joest paint scheme is still very attractive. Here's a link to my Hasegawa 962.

Finished the floor and attatched the wheels now. Also finished the dash and glued it on. Cockpit is just waiting on some fabric seatbelts and then it'll be done too. Having sprayed the body gloss white I started to put the decals on last night. The blue stripes are in 3 main pieces and went on alright. Bit of sol/set to get them to curve over onto the sides was all that was needed. I knew the age of this kit and the decided the decals weren't that yellow but I decided to test with a minor decal just in case and it turned out they were worse than I thought so I only got as far as 'Joest Racing'. The rest of the sheet has been taped to my window all afternoon so it should be ready for tomorrow. Here's the progress anyway

That looks very nice. How did you get rid of the excessive black paint you had left over from spraying the headlight-background? Just sanding?

Yep, just a bit of light sanding. Then I masked off the lights and dash and put another couple of coats of primer over the areas I'd sanded and then sprayed the whole body gloss white once I'd given it some time to harden

Well I've finished the majority of the decals. Just two more on the roof (which suffered the worst of the yellowing and so are still taped to my window) and 3 for the wing which still hasn't been finished after I messed up the first coat of white and had to start again. Also finished the decals on the tyres. I've never liked the tyre decals that are printed ackwards with the adhesive on the front but this time they went on ok and luckily Hasagawa provided a second sheet. Not sure if these are intended for the inside of the tyres but I decided not to put them on the inside as you can't see them anyway, rather use them for spares
Also put the glass in and the decals over the glass. Now for the windscreen it wouldn't fit properly and I couldn't bend it, I'd end up cracking it. So in the end I just put a dab of superglue on either side to try and keep it there. It worked and fortunately didn't react with the plastic or cloud up the glass. I'm just waiting for the postman to bring some fabric seatbelts I ordered and then I can finish this car off Here's the pic so far

Well I decided not to wait for the seatbelts. The seat is very hard to see through the windscreen anyway so it wouldn't have added much. So here it is, finished. I decided to try and do this properly this time. I couldn't find my nice tripod so I dug out and old relic I got from a boot sale but it did the job. Didn't have a big white sheet so I improvised and used my chair as it's the largest object that is a similar shade. You can see I didn't modify the wing supports in the end, I just left them as the kit pieces. I would have done it no problem but I drilled the holes in the body before thinking that I needed the modify the supports. You can also see I put some foil tape in the mirrors. Much better than silver paint

Looks great! You work very fast as well. I have never seen a project on here finished in a week!
