ECU fails repeatedly on '97 Golf Cabrio

Any common causes for repeated ECU fails on '97 Golf cabrio ?

I've read of a problem on older 1988/90 Digifant II ECUs blowing up if earth strap to engine/clutch housing fails so starter motor current returns through ECU. Does this apply to a '97 Golf ?

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
