99 dodge durango not stayin on

I have a 99 dodge durango with a 5.2 liter. The car cranks on but u have to keep your foot on the gas for about 2min if u release the gas right away the car shuts off but if you hold the gas it stays on. dont know what it could be does anybody have any suggsestions. what could be wrong

These engines act that way when the battery is weak. Have you had a dead battery in recent days, or signs of a weaker battery?
When was the last time the battery was changed?

It could be a few other things, but the way that you said 2 minutes, sounds like the battery.
Usually Autozone, or Checker or such will test the alternator and battery while on the vehicle.

its been about a year since i changed the battery. could it be anythang with the fuel pump or anythang like that. cause it feel like the engine needs the fuel to stay on oh and by the way the battery is also dying have to jump start to try to get car to work

It's definitely the fact that the battery is low on charge after you jump start it. Been there, done that several times.

Now, the question is why won't the battery stay charged?
Something pulling current while the vehicle is off, or is the alternator not charging.
Take it to Autozone for the free alternator test.

Sorry it to me so long to reply. It ended up being that the battery had a dead cell in it. I guess it wasent giving enough power to the fuel pump which caused it not to pressureize. Took battery back to where i bought tested it and came back with dead cell. New battery took care of problem then took it to autozone to check altenator and everything was fine.
