Turn signal problem

First time post, I have read some of the other posts on this site and I thought someone here would be able to help me out.
I have a 1998 Lumina where both turn signals work intermittently, the right is worse than the left. When it happens you can hear the signal clicking but the light is not turning on. I changed all directional bulbs even though they looked ok but still have the same problem. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Turn signal problem

There is a signal flasher that controls them, maybe be even two. One for the directionals and one for the hazzards. There are small plastic devices that plug into the wire harness under the dash. They can be hard to locate unless you know what you are looking for.

I see if I can link to a image of one...

Do the hazzard flahers work? If so they it the turn signal flasher

Here is the GM part number, both the hazzard and turn signal use same part but I can't tell if they are one for each. AC Delco does not provide an image of one.

Re: Turn signal problem

I have an '04 Impala, and the turn signals do not work. They will work if I manually "blink" them, but otherwise, nothing. Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: Turn signal problem

Sounds like it could be the turn signal switch but that is often located inside the steering colume. They dont' often fail but can. Its not an easy job to replace that for the novice. Might be best to consult a qualified ASE shop or a GM dealer.

The thing to keep in mind with your problem and that of the 1st poster is that other things could cause the same symptons and it should be checked out before replacing parts to avoid unnecessary expense.

Fyi - Trailer wiring harness are often the cause of many of these problems. They are often installed poorly.

Re: Turn signal problem

Actually, the turn signal/multifunction switches are a very common problem on these cars. The grease that lubricates them wears away causing the contacts to wear out and arc. It will cause taillamp, brakelamp and turn signal issues. Sometimes you'll see or smell the smoke the arching contact cause coming from the steering column.
