turbo question

a buddy gave me a screwed up turbo, dont really know what it is and neither does he, but it is a t25 flange. i took it to a turbo repair shop and he said that the barings were worn and it was burning oil, fixable with a turbo rebuild for about 280 with parts and labor.
anyways, he told me that the exhaust side(turbine i think) was just a t25 turbine housing. he couldnt give me any trim specs on it or anything.
he said the compressor housing was 60a/r with a 60 trim.
im wondering if anybody knows anything about this and if it would be worth the rebuild.
thanks

Re: turbo question

280 is a good price for a rebuil, people are charging me 350+ to rebuild so im doing it my self. as for the specs get the inducer and exducer size square them both then divide inducer/exducer and you will have your trim. its prob. a t-25 or t-28 possibably form a rb. the t-25/t-28 from there are bigger then sr t-25/28.

Re: turbo question

i dont have ne pics right now because it is at the turbo shop still in peices. i am comfertable with the rebuild price and can do it, but i was wondering if the upgrade would be worth it or i should spend some more and go with something else.

Don't you have a basic cartridge T3? Aren't those like 50 bucks to rebuild? lol

yeah thats what i was going to say.

i thought he was running a T04B, which uses any standard T series catridge (i think ive even got a few in my garage). they are pretty common and parts are cheap. kinda a pain to rebuild unless you make your own snap ring pliers (which you probably will if you do it yourself) but other than that its simple. make sure to index the nut on the end unless you want to have it rebalanced..

Re: turbo question

yea its a t04b, i got a rebuild kit for 120 from garret, the reason it is so much is becauses it uses silcone coated bronze journal bearings, 360degree thrust and a dynamic seal. so its a little more beefier then stock, im sending my wheel to get re balanced b/c i didnt mark it, im debating whether to us the p trim wheel with the .69 ar or use my wheel which is smaller ( cant rember the trim) with teh .58 a/r housing.

if this rebuild goes well im going to build another turbo, i have 2 t04 lying around my office. thats gona be my race turbo..

you'll be happier with the .58 a/r IMO. Then again, if you were to put a TO4E compressor housing on there, the .58 would be even better. .69 with a to4b is usually a little late for the smaller flow VS the TO4E
