Re: Converting the BMW M1 Protour into a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 LeMans

It will be very interesting to see, what you do to the rims when to make the discs visible. If your way seems manageable I might take my M1 out of the shelf and try the same!
I tried to figure that out by reading gioncs post, but hey, you guys seem to start some sort of your own language!

Besides that, keep up your enthusiasm to make the transkit work. It will be a stunner for sure!

Re: Converting the BMW M1 Protour into a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 LeMans

I shouldn't complain after seeing what Sean and Phil have had to do recently but this was still a royal PIA to do

I used the Revel decals on the covers instead of the Renaissance p/e parts which has the wrong script: it says “M-Power” instead of “BMW Motorsports”)

The tubing for the plug leads was made out of styrene rod with the end drilled out and wires were made out of 0.3mm enameled wire. Spare p/e sprue was used to add the clamps.

When all the wiring is finished, it well get a heavy oil wash to tone down the decals etc. and I will probably put some dull-cote on the wires for the same reason.

Over and out

Six spark plugs - bloody luxury! Looks superb Stevenski, will no doubt be even better after a wash.

Will those rear mounting arms be visible on the finished model? There are some ugly sink marks in them.

This is great Steve, really. I'll see some silvering or some air under the decal and... are you sure they covered up the BWL logo with a spark plug rail? Seem me crazy. Ok is a racing car...

Stev,

engine looks terrific - very clean and a great bit of detail work too.

I agree with the Phil though - only six spark plugs/leads - almost seems like half an engine compared to the Porsche!! ha-ha

Doesn't a Veyron have 14 radiators or something? Sounds like something I'd like to try!

I told you all I lazy. I'll always take a straight-6 over a V-12 any day

They are not really visible in the final fitment but to trll truth I left them there on purpose - I thought they looked kind of cool

I think that it is more reflection than silvering but I'll check again. I used a lot of Sol to get it down. In fact I had such an ocean of Set&Sol that I couldn't see the placement area properly and it was only afterwards that I realized I had placed it too much to the right

You are right about the BMW logo but there was nothing I could do about it. Anything thin enough to not cover the the logo was too small for the plug wires and anything big enough to let me use regular insulated plug wire was so large it looked out of scale and covered the whole head cover Honestly, I have been f*rting around with this for a week trying different rods, tubes, syringe needles and wires etc. In the end I said 'miiiing****" and did it like this

My reference pictures showed that some cars had this rail on the left, some on the right and others not at all. I wanted to add it felt that covering the roundel was the lesser evil

The whole thing needed to be a compromise.

Re: Converting the BMW M1 Protour into a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 LeMans

ski... that engine! man, you've raised the bar again. i'm not worthy.

ok, after a couple of absolutely crazy weeks at work (we're "downsizing," which is corporate speak for firing people; so far i'm safe), i've managed to do some work on the 365.

i've finished all the suspension bits and assembled the chassis. yes, i know the transaxle looks crooked in the pic.

another shot, from the rear. yes. there's some excess epoxy glue on the back end off the chassis; it's there to add strength to a flimsy area. it won't be visible when the model is assembled.

next up is the engine. i've assembled the block and will begin detailing the cam covers, distributors, etc. then i get to do twice as much wiring as you did, ski. here's a shot of the 1:1 engine in the Pozzi car i'm building:

and here's a shot of the engine in a N.A.R.T. 365 for further reference:

i'll have to fabricate an airbox, but that will spare me from having to plumb the six Weber carbs. here's a shot of the assembled block, and a clearer shot of the brake rotors and calipers donated by stryfe101 from a Fujimi Enthusiast kit and detailed with S27 PE.

and a shot of the real brakes for comparison:

i'm also making progress on the body, which is almost ready for paint. i'll provide updates in a more timely fashion, i promise!

Re: Converting the BMW M1 Protour into a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 LeMans

got a little work done this morning. since the valve covers are black, i figured i'd start prepping interior parts since most of that stuff's black too. that way i can squirt it with the airbrush at the same time.

the Italeri dash features molded gauges, buttons and knobs. they'll be replaced with S27 PE parts, so i shaved the dash smooth. i also drilled out the four vents in the top of the dash.

getting the gauge cluster smooth enough for the Model Car Garage gauge decals proved almost impossible , so i filled it with a piece of .010 sheet styrene. i used the same stuff for the back of the seat; the Italeri piece had molded-in map pockets and looked toyish.

although the valve covers on the Pozzi car are entirely black, i want the details to stand out, so i covered the covers with BMF. i'll scrape the paint off afterward to add a little flash and contrast to the engine bay. besides - it was a good excuse to experiment with BMF.

pics:

good god my camera sucks. sorry for the poor quality.

Keep up the momentum Dude! You're on a roll...

For anyone out there planning to do the M1, I thought I'd share some new reference pictures I found thanks to a Didier Pieroni fan and his website - thanks Jan for your kindness!!

I am now officially takig the stand point that Tamiya Light blue and Frnch Blue are too dark for this car and that the original color WAS a very light greeney-turquoisey-bogey kind of color

here are the pics:

You are quite right!! My mistake - I meant 2 not 3.
I think I'll go with 1 (with maybe a dash of 47 added for a weathering effect )
