not 1980...1975

sorry i just got the truck and wasnt clear on the year til i saw the title. Basically its running like poo but shouldnt be. I found that the main spark plug wire was loose and wont snap back on. Would that cause it to run bad?

There are many things that can cause it to run bad. Bad Distributor, worn carburetor, worn camshaft, weak compression, tired engine etc. What do you mean, "main spark plug wire"? A 1975 should have an HEI distributor, which is coil-in-cap.

Re: not 1980...1975

Ok sorry. I was in a hurry last night. So its a 1975 c-10. Its got records of every oil change, gas fill up, all the maintenance and a ton of invoices for different repairs done to it including a new rebuilt engine and automatic transmission. It was converted to automatic. All records since 1975. It suns ok but seems to bog down at least until it warms up. I was looking at it last night and i was shecking the spark plug wires. When i pulled the middle one off it wouldnt go back on. It just wouldnt snap into place. Im not sure if it was like that already or if i did it when i pulled it off. Im getting it legal today and i need to make it drivable by tomorrow so any help i can get would be greatly appreciated as i'm not to familiar with chevy because ive never owned one. Thanks

Re: not 1980...1975

So, please explain what you mean by the "middle one" (spark plug wire). Where does it go to from the distributor cap? If you have a wire coming from the middle of the dist cap to a coil, then you don't have a factory 1975 distributor. As far as "bogging down when cold" that is probably an incorrect choke setting on the carb. Please tell us what motor is in it!!

Re: not 1980...1975

ok. Here's the deal. Its a straight six that was either rebuilt or replaced the original engine. I changed the spark plugs and wires and also the carb air filter. Its still running horribly. It seems like its ok when its idling but then begins to slowly kill out as it accelerates. it revs up pretty good but once on the road and going it hardly does anything. Its very slow and has almost no power. Giving it gas just makes it worse. Not sure what to think. Im lookin thru the haynes book checking everything. There is a vacuum line that is sucking but not hooked up so im trying to find where that goes. Im really desperate to get it fixed because its my only way to work.

The carb is a rochester monojet.

If i place my hands over the carb intake it actually runs way better. Take it off and it will bog down while accelerating.
