keyless entry question. HURRY HURRY
I bought a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee for my main vehicle. It did not have a remote with it when I bought it. I do not know if it has keyless entry.
Did all 96s have keyless entry? I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee ( that I am parting out) with a working keyless remote. Is there a receiver that I can pull from the 98 and use on the 96? Or any other ideas? So I need to know if there is a receiver where is it located? Hopefully its a seperate receiver and not part of any other control module, etc. And how can I tell if my 96 was equipped with keyless entry? I heard of a website where you can type inyour VIN and it will tell you if you have the option but ofcourse I cant find it. I have parts for sale on Ebay. Just look for the seller....... Repo_agent Thanks for any help |

(So I need to know if there is a receiver where is it located? Hopefully its a seperate receiver and not part of any other control module, etc.)
The RKE receiver is in the passenger door module on the 98 GC and it is combined with the VTSS (vehicle security system )and I woundn't think that it would be that much differant from a 96 GC if you have power locks. you can get all the info you need by taking your VIN# to a JEEP Dealer parts dept. they are pretty good about helping out with this, then ask the service manager if it can be swaped out with the 98 GC they have been more hands on longer than the parts guys & may know more about it.if you already have remote function, the dealer can program new sender units for about an hours charge + parts. If you don't have that optionon on the 96 GC You can get an aftermarket keyless system installed For $200-$300 from an audio store, less money & headache than swapping that door module. The DRB scan tool that programs the keychain sender unit & alarm system is pretty expensive so you almost have to go to a dealer to get the jeep system programed. Ironic I was just reading up on this tonite tosee if the alarm system maybe the reason why my 98GC won't start after I changed my fuel pump. Hope this helps, marktruck |

Re: keyless entry question. HURRY HURRY
Yes, it is inside the driver's door and should swap out although I'd bet the '96 has it in there already. So, just try to program the fob from the '98.
Again, the aftermarket item might be where to go too if nothing else works. I charge about $300 for keyless/remote start and about $175 for keyless only for your reference.

Re: keyless entry question. HURRY HURRY
The 96 and 98 Grand Cherokee models used the same receiver and remotes. You should be able to just program the remote(s) you have from the 98 to work on the 96...

While I was working on stripping the 98 my little 3 year old girl was playing with the remote for it and after about 2 minutes off playing with it my 96 started flashing lights and honking horn. I grabbed the remote from her and found out that she somehow got it to work on the 96. It has worked fine for a week now.
Thanks for all the info but I wasnt about to take anything to a dealer and the $200-300 for aftermarket installed is crazy. I can find a good alarm/keyless entry on ebay for well under $100 and install it myself and for those of you who cant install an alarm Im sure a friend can do it for $50. |
