1998 Cutlas starter replacement
When I start my 98 cutlass(115K), sometimes the starter engages and turns the engine for a couple seconds and then it sounds like maybe the starter loses contact with the flywheel and then it just spins without turning the motor.
The battery checks out okay. So I am assuming something isn't right with the starter. Does anyone have a link or a picture diagram as to how to remove the starter Or can someone explain it to me for this car. What looks like the 2 bolts for the starter are in a vertical position, but when I think of pulling a starter, I would think they would be positioned horizontally. I'm just looking for some advice before I risk opening a "can of worms" |

Re: 1998 Cutlas starter replacement
Actually the starter is mounted horizontally but the bolts go into he block vertically. If you remove these bolt you should be able to remove the starter. Make sure you remove the battery terminal before beginning this removal. I also think your problem is with the solenoid not the starter itself. But you still have to remove the starter to change the solenoid. If there are any shims on the starter bolts when you remove it make sure to reinstall them. You can log onto Autozone.com and they should have a diagram on how to remove this starter.
