Question Does your instrument panel go in and out?

I own a 2000 Xterra 4X4, manual, with 67,000 miles on it. I've owned it for 6 months. The instrument cluster occasionally shuts off. Sometimes dropping all needles. Sometimes pinning them in any other position other than an accurate one. On top of this my odometer goes out and does not advance while this is happening. I'm getting roughly 300 miles on a full tank. My best is 370. I know there is more because of the dash problem. This has happened on and off since the day I bought it. But not during the test drives. On occasion for a brief time period the entire dash lights would flicker, but not the headlights. This has not happened recently.

Other than that the truck runs wonderful and I'm disappointed in the private seller. Does anyone have any ideas or ever experienced this? Suggestions? I've talked with Nissan. 3-6 ($300-$500) weeks for them to ship it to the factory and have it looked at. 3-6 weeks without a vehicle. I'm seeking other options. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The PCB (printed circuit board) on the back of the instrument cluster is known to act up like this. Not a common problem, but certainly documented on more than a handful of vehicles. Replacing the PCB is the fix.

Is this an easy fix. Accessible from where? From inside the cab I assume. I'm mechanically inclined to some degree. Just a matter of removing dash? What? Direct me to a link with instructions, maybe?

Thanks so much for the reply. Anything is better than nothing.

Unless you can find a wrecked Xterra/Frontier w/ similar mileage and swap out the cluster yourself, it has to be replaced by a dealer and the odometer has to be programmed as part of the procedure.

Remove the instrement cluster .. Inspect wires for any cuts or damage.. it could be a short or it could be the cluster assy if wires all look ok.. The instrement clust is also Know as a unifyed meter.. Depending on your Production date there are 2 different modle meters..24814 and 24810 if 10-00 and above .. those are part number prefix.. GL
