Have 97 sts with 130,000 pampered miles. Car runnung perfect day before. Got check engine light for a while then it went off. Next thing you know car will only shift 1st to 2nd . does not seem to be slipping, just will not change gears. ?????
Caddy dealer said I need new tranny but I have doubts that it could go completely bad in an instant. Drove car home from dealer at 30 mph hoping not to further the problem. Any suggestions of reputable shop near charlotte NC |

Sounds like the shift solenoid(s) have failed. Any reputable shop can do this repair. The trans won't need to come out.

I had the same problem on my 95 SLS and was told I needed a tranny rebuild.I heard of a reputable trans shop and had it towed in.They replaced 2 shift solenoids and serviced the fluid for less than $400.That was 45k miles ago and it has been fine since.Owner of the shop said he had seen that a lot with that tranny.

Re: 1997 STS tranny
Check the engine codes, and see what it says. Most likely the codes are for shift solenoids as they mentioned.
