Question 77 vw camper

1. I'm close to purchasing a 77 camper in good cond. w/30,000 on a rebuilt 2 litre engine, new transmission, new cv joints, new brakes, new tires. Is $5900 too much?
2. A vw mechanic said to stay away from the 77 and all air cooled vw engines cos the exhaust will screw up and damage the heads. There are no replacement parts he said. Is that true?

Thanks
Allan

Re: 77 vw camper

There's nothing particularly wrong with the 2.0 air cooled, other than parts can be expensive & finding good heads can be difficult. It would be better if it still had the fuel injection as the single cars are finicky. On the West coast they go alot higher than here in the East, compare prices at http://www.thesamba.com
