3.1 engine rebuilding
The saga of the 96 lumina 3.1 goes on, the original problem is back. Even after I took apart every lifter cleaned them and soaked them in oil before replacement. The first few I took out I didn't notice which way the were facing, I was wondering does it matter whether the fac any particular direction, as long as they face so the retwiner goes over them correctly. After replacing the intake gasket at 135k, and trying to clean out the lifters, the lifter noise is now louder than before, it took close to 40 minuites at idle to quiet most of the down. I still have one lifter making a lot of noise and the cars exhaust pops along with the noise. Should I have just replaced the lifters, or did I do some thing wrong putting the back in?

Replace them, no sense in messing with it, they were only designed for a 100K life anyway. Also, are you sure you didn't tighten the rockers too much?
Either way, new lifters, Cam and push rods sound like they are in order. |

are you for sure that every lifter wnet right back in where it came from? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I dont believe these are interchangable.

The lifters were replaced one for one in their exact place. The pushrods are different lengths(intake/exhaust), and they were also replaced one for one in their exact place. You can't overtighten these style of rockers. Besides I did tighten them to book settings with a tourque wrench. I also just stripped another motor of all it's rockers, push rods and lifters, (the rockers are a different style but should work just fine) some of the lifters don't look so good, so I might as well just replace them with new. Any idea how much they run? BTW I checked with my mechanic, and he is not aware of any difference which way the lifter is oriented long as it faces the proper way in the bracket that covers them.

Well here is an update, just ordered new lifters, found some GM original for a good price , will have them in about 5 days, then back to tearing the intake off again. Kept the cardboard diagrams from the first time should make it a little easier.
