Need Speed Sensor Replaced

I have been experiencing trouble with the OD transmission due to a Speed Sensor problem as indicated by computer diagnostics at a local mechanic.

The faulty Speed Sensor not only causes intermittant functioning of the speedometer but also causes the tranny to operate under "Safe" mode, making gear changes very sudden and abrupt.

I was told that replacing the speed sensor is all I would need to do and that it would be pretty easy. Can anyone point me to a good manual for this or have any tips of your own? Thanks.

The VSS is on the top front of the differential. One connector, and one bolt hold it in place. Easy fix. A more common CAUSE of VSS signal problems is bad connections at the harness connectors under the driver's seat area on the inside of the frame.

Anymore suggestions, I changed the speed sensor and still have the problem with the sppedometer jumping and the transmission going into safe (?) mode.

clean first

Replacing the speed sensor on my E 350 - 92 solved my shift problems, which was similar to your description. The job was done at a Ford workshop, after electronic diagnosing.

A friend later got the same problem, and solved it by taking out the sensor, cleaning the contact points and putting the sensor back.
The sensor isn`t an expensive part, but why replace if it can do some more work.

Re: Need Speed Sensor Replaced

i am also having shifting problems with my 1989 Ford E-150 except im not having the speedometer problem. its basicly acting as if there is a vacume leak in the modulator. but since its newer than modulators there isnt one. it shifts, but way too late like 35 or 40mph, and when it does shift it shifts very hard. does anyone think this would also be a speed sensor? im going to try cleaning the contacts as allana's freind did. i already changed the filter. and added trans-medic. both helped but only for a short time.

Re: Need Speed Sensor Replaced

Hi there! I have a 91 RV with a Ford Econoline 350 Chassis and two things happened during our last trip: (1) my rear ABS light came on and (2) my speedometer bounces and goes from 0 MPH to 10 MPH after my transmission shifts - can you give me some advice on what to check for?

Re: Need Speed Sensor Replaced

Hi there! I hope this helps others....I purchased the speed sensor that is located on top of the differential this morning, replaced the old one in 3 minutes and my speedometer and Rear ABS light were fixed. I would recommend that you disconnect the battery before performing the work so that the computer is reset. This was a very easy fix that cost $16 by buying the sensor at NAPA

Re: Need Speed Sensor Replaced

Just for alittle information the VSS in ford trucks go out alot. The early trucks have 2 on in the trans on the speedo cable and a second one in the rear end. Before 86 they only have one and it is in the trans.

Re: Need Speed Sensor Replaced

I have a 1994 e150. I already changed the speed sensor on the rear axle housing. Now my speedometer jumps a little bit once it reaches 45-50 mph. Does my van have two speed sensors? If so, should I changed the one on the tranny?

Re: Need Speed Sensor Replaced

You need to check the connector on the sensor also. They will get loose or the wire will break in the connector and mke bad contact. I did change a lot of speedo heads when that body style just came out but not in 10 years since.

So does a 1994 e150 have two speed sensors? If so where are they located?
