What Drives You?
What are the most common engines to use for a Super7 kit?
Has anyone ever used a VW 16v or a AE86 16v? I would think it would be possible.

The AE86 is that the rear drive Toyota Corrola GTS or the later front drive?.. 16 valve (4AGE)is common in the US and in Austrailia for this purpose...mated to the toyota T50 - 22spline... transmission... many also use the limited slip GTS differential with its disk brakes.... which can handle a lot more horsepower... reputed to handle up to 250 hp in the light lotus 7 body.... A 4-AGE can be pulled out of a front drive...and mated to a toyota T-50... but you need a different bellhousing... .oil pan ...dip stick and intake mods... ...
The 4AGE is popular... for many reasons... in the US...availability...but also because it has a racing history in the GTS.... and lots of modification parts available.... The "Atlantic" version can be souped up to 250 hp.... but even with minor mods...(not to the block) it easily reaches 160.... There are many web pages... out there...on lotus seven builds... or (locost "7" based upon ron chapmans book... to build one from scratch.) The easies setup is to pull the full ... engine/trans and rear drive set out of a rear drive Toyota Corolla GTS... around 1987 or earlier because it is all properly mated up.... Champion motor sports makes "7" kits...chassis...or cars... they also do a conversion on the GTS front struts... to convert them to spindles for the Double wish bone front end used in lotus 7 type cars. I have a 1987 Corrolla GTS engine/trans(strapped to a palate)/drive shaft/ 2 LSD disk brake differentials/ a ton of toyota aluminim rims/ and a used set of Caterham Lotus 7 fenders if you or anyone else is interested..... I was starting to scratch build a lotus (locost) when the bid "D" (divorce) legal fees ... etc hit and ended the project... they are for sale... as were a lot of other things... There are many "locost" web pages which are dedicated to these cars and kits alone...as well as the 4age 16 toyota engine ...good luck... I live in Minnesota if anyone is interested in these parts. |
