Heavy Stearing '91 735i

I just the oil pan gasket changed on my 1991 735i. When finished
I immediately noticed that the steering had gotten considerably heavier.

After asking the mechanic about it, he said it seems normal to him.
I understand they had to suspend the engine to change the gasket.
Could something have changed during this, such as a belt or something?
