Ferrari F189 - Progress
My newest project! The Tamiya 1/20 Ferrari F189. This is the car that raced the 1989 Portugese Grand Prix and won. Which is also the B car for the season.I will be replicating Gerhard Bergers #28 car on account of him actually winning the race.I picked this kit up at www.hobbylinc.com for 14 bucks. At that price I couldnt refuse it. Also considering I am planning a detailed F1-2000 I figured this would give me some good practice for it. What I have here is just basic mock ups before primering. Which I will do right after this!
Basic mock up with all major body parts. Things seem to fit quite well. Buisness as usual for tamiya! I forgot to take a picture of this before I blended it in to the bodywork but they had a separate molded piece that was very odd. I do not know why they did not have it modled into the body. It was a chore to sand it even with the body and blend it but I guess it looks alright. You can see my putty work where it needed it. BTW If this thread gets slow in the future I apologize, school is one of those things that needs more attention than modeling!

I’ve built this one many years ago.
It’s a nice model and the final result is real good. From the times they were truly painted in Italian Red. ![]() Studio 27 has a decal set with the Marlboro logos and the grade up parts (wings, radiator mesh, belts, etc). Don’t know if it is easy to find. Acu-Stion also have a mechanical part set. ![]() Good work on this one. |

Nice subject, not a dominant machine like this days but true Ferrari. Good luck in learning (both school and kit) :-)

Yes. I have found the Acu-Stion PE set but it was in the 30 dollar range at media mix. Little too high for me. I did not ever see the Studio 27 kit though.

Re: Ferrari F189 - Progress
Ah, the first Barnard designed Ferrari, sigh.
Very nice kit, I built close to 10 years ago ![]() The reason the headrest was a seperate part was because of the shape. Think of the way the molds fit together and you'll realise it would not be possible to mold the wholle thing with a two part mold and have it eject cleanly. These days Tamiya use multiple part, sliding molds but they are more complex and expensive. |

Re: Ferrari F189 - Progress
Heads up to anyone empyting laquer into a airbrush bottle. Today I was putting TS-8 into my airbrush jar. I filled it up(stirred it to get air out), basically following Brians Model Cars tutorial. About two hours after the paint was in I came back to spray it and it exploded out of the jar. It went just about everywhere. Face, shirt, table, eyes(I thought I would go blind!). So everyone watch out. I think I did not mix the paint enough right when I sprayed it. Or maybe not. Right now I am not very sure. So now I will spray it X-7 as opposed to TS-8. Hopefully it will make things safer!

Re: Ferrari F189 - Progress
Nasty experience Stephen.
Was there a warning in the BMC tutorial about letting the propellant gas out of the paint? If not, you just found out the hard way, as I did long ago In my experience it takes overnight for the gasses to disperse, sitting with the lid just resting on the jar so the gas is not trapped inside. Leaving a matchstick sitting in it, and stirring (very gently) occasionally helps too. Even then you still need to be careful opening the lid on the jar, very slowly listening for any gas escaping, letting it settle then opening a tad more, etc. Until you can remove the lid entirely. The TS-8 will be okay if you give it longer to gas out. If you can put a matchstick in the paint and stir it vigorously without any bubbling then you know it is right to use in your airbrush. |

Re: Ferrari F189 - Progress
Paranoia has set in... I dont think I can touch a spray can for a while. Or any gaseous paints that could possibly explode...Im sticking to Tamiya Acrylics for a while!

This paintjob was my first using an airbrush. I cannot be that angry about it becuase for my first time I must admit it is not that bad. So somewhat of a bittersweet paintjob. The paint is X-7 like I already stated earlier. Next up on the paintlist is pretty much everything that is smei-gloss black. I find that painting a single color at one time saves alot of paint and time. So I will basically paint everything and then assemble like mad. Well here are the paintjob pictures. Enjoy!
If you look closely on this pitcure and the next picture, it shows pretty accurately the orange peel I did get. So it is not really that bad and hopefully should polish out without a wetsand(I hate wetsanding although if necessary I will do it) Side Shot of body
