frontend noise

My 98 with about 100k has started makeing strange noises from the front . It first started when making a left or right turn it would feel (thru the steering wheel) like the tires were crabing almost as if in 4wd on dry pavement. Then this stoped about a week ago and it now makes a scraping noise from around the front wheels when going around corners at moderate speeds. Have pulled wheels and don't see anything that stands out. Any ideas (u-joint) ??? Thanks jw

Hi there,

It sounds like i've been having a similar problem with my 96 with 100k on it. Definitely acts up on turns, and when i'm on forest roads there is a distinctive "rattle". I've had friends say it sounds like a CV joint thing, but really have no idea. I'll keep you updated if I come to any conclusions, let me know what you find. Good luck!

Hi there, I had the same noises/feeling on my 90 Cherokee Ltd last year. Turns out it the bushings on the upper control arms had worn and it was causing a jerking motion/noise at the differential. Replaced both arms (bushings not available seperataly) and everything works and sounds great. Take a look at yours. Hope this helps!

Re: frontend noise

I had a similar problem, grinding and shaking when cornering. I replaced the front u joints and the bearing assembly and solved the problem. After doing the job I realized that It was the passenger side bearings that had failed. It seamed fine when I spun the wheel with the front end jacked up but when I got the bearing off I could tell that it had been overheating the metal around the bearing looked burnt and pitted. I went ahead and replaced the u joints with greaseable ones while I had the oppertunity.

As the previous post suggests this most definitely sounds like a wheel bearing problem. The mileage is about right for new front wheel bearing replacement anyways.
