First of all i want to let everyone know that i know nothing at all about this but i have an old 89 corolla that i want to swap engines with but i need some ideas. very simply i want power but i dont know what engines are the right size or type to fit. is a 3S-GTE a realistic possibility given i can find one? can i take out the auto trans and replace with a 5 speed? i have a friend who is very capable when it comes to these things but hes a Ford man so he doesnt know much about these engines. please help ....

This is a Corolla FX-16 with a 3S-GTE...
Although it's a different model, it still provides good reference for what you have to do. It's FWD Corolla like yours, so you should be able to do the same thing. http://www.turbocorolla.com/cars/michaelz.htm Good luck,

If you go turbo, you really need to go EFI from the carb version....
You will need injectors, fuel rail, etc...
