Unhappy 89 corolla swap-help me please

First of all i want to let everyone know that i know nothing at all about this but i have an old 89 corolla that i want to swap engines with but i need some ideas. very simply i want power but i dont know what engines are the right size or type to fit. is a 3S-GTE a realistic possibility given i can find one? can i take out the auto trans and replace with a 5 speed? i have a friend who is very capable when it comes to these things but hes a Ford man so he doesnt know much about these engines. please help ....

This is a Corolla FX-16 with a 3S-GTE...

Although it's a different model, it still provides good reference for what you have to do. It's FWD Corolla like yours, so you should be able to do the same thing.

Good luck,

If you go turbo, you really need to go EFI from the carb version....

You will need injectors, fuel rail, etc...
