86.5 truck SEV6 EVAP cannister -bypass it?

SE-V6 4x4 manual trans

Can I bypass my evap cannister? It sits on the driver's side inner fender near the ignition module and looks like a brake booster. Mine is a pile of rust and the paper airfilter inside has disintegrated. They are about $200 and do not last. It seems that subsequent models have a different version but the dealer cannot tell me if I can upgrade to the newer type or bypass it altogether. Someone must have a fix for this since everyone I saw in the junkyards was just as rotten.
