Question Physical difference between GSR and Type R motor (B18c1 and B18c5)

Hi everyone, i am new to this forum, but actually i have been reading all the threads in this forum since last month when i was planning to swap a engine for my Civic. I have decided to go for a B18c5 ITR motor. There is a problem. I heard ppl are saying that some stores would sell u a ITR motor, but actually, they are giving u a B18C1 motor with the red cover. So I would like to know if there are any ways i can tell if it is a B18C5 ITR motor or just a B18C1 GSR motor? except the red cover since u can change it. Please, if you have some pictures that you can post in here, please do so and i will apprecaite that. I don't want my $5000 to be spent on a B18C1 motor. Thanks

Damn $5k is a good price, I see them for a little under 6 mostly. There should be a molded stamp somewhere on the block which says B18C5, I forget where though. If you can't find it, I guess once it's installed see where it redlines. 8400 = itr... Also, check the tranny to see if it has a limited slip. I'm not 100% sure but I think itr's come stock with lsd trannies. I know my ctr engine does... On the outside it will look exactly like the c1 since they're both integra 1.8's and I think even the LS looks like it too. Your best bet is to look for that little stamp on there. Sorry I couldn't help you out more.

thanks for that info and I know there is a stamp on the exterior of the engine but i donno where that is also, so please, if someone could post some picture or direct me to where that stamp is, that would be great. In addition, will that stamp be able to redulpicate and put on the engine? I got this price from a store that is specialty in swapping engines for almost all imports and they are the one who sells 99% of JDM engines to California stores. Let me know if you guys are interested and I can tell u where that is in Los Angeles. They offer a very good price.

if stock both (usdm or jdm) the C1 intake manifold is a dead give a way but check the stamp on the block.

thanks again, but does anyone has any pictures for these engines so i can distinguish from each? That is the biggest concern about swapping and i don't know if the shop will actually give me a B18C5 or a B18C1. Also, as far as the molded stamp concern, will the stamp actually shows B18C5 or B18C? and what about the GSR engine, will it show as B18C1 or B18C? Of course I am talking about JDM.

the stamp is right on the block just under the distributor, it will say
b18c(?) and a number. other than that visual differences will be minimal.

Does the store have a website or something? Even though, if you're concerned about them ripping you off, giving you a c1 instead of a c5, i'm not sure that ordering from them is a smart move.

actually, many people told me this store is trustable but they just have a little higher price than others. They don't have any website, but their name is ABCD located in El Monte. In addition, I want to know if there is any way i can tell what years is the engine?

the way to tel is like CRXLVR saiod, the stamp which is in front of the engine right before where it bolts to the tranny there will be a like 2"x2" square with the letters HM i think and then B18C1 or B18C5.

the GSR intake manifold starts from the head and rises up and then falls in the back, the ITR manifold comes straight outta the head and looks like the LS manifold. then theres the valvecover.. and about the tranny code I dot know those.

the question mark i put was to represent the number(either a 1 or a 5)

find the distributor cap then look about 10" straight below it just to the right of the tranny, there will be a 2"x2" flat box stamped onto the block, it will say either b18c1(GSR) or b18c5(Type-R).

i think it is B18C for boith GSR and ITR if your getting a non usdm engine. but the stamping onn the head should tell you which one you are looking at.

Re: Physical difference between GSR and Type R motor (B18c1 and B18c5)

dude this is SO OLD! check dates before you post. you must have had to DIG for this one, and when you have to do that we probably dont care about reading it anymore, and the guys questions have been answered. and if its a JDM ITR, it will be B18C.

and about the RPM's, when you buy an engine it most likely will not come with the guage cluster so you dont get to see the tach. plus the ITR doesnt redline at 9k if I remember correctly. its just a couple hundred above the GSR I think. I may be wrong but I shouldnt even been given the opportunity to be wrong in this thread anymore!
