Question Help with 1998 Gd. Voyager slippage problem

I have had an almost totally problem free 3.3L Plymouth Grand Voyager for all these many years and for that I am grateful. However, recently I notice what appears to be either an engine skip or a trans slip.

Here are the symptoms:

When I reach around 45 mph there seems to be a hesitation or slippage and the tachometer needle goes into a vibration mode. From a standing position in drive I can apply pressure to the brake when pressing on the accelerator pedal and the tachometer needle jumps wildly and rises rapidly.

No check engine light has appeared yet.

I realize that the symptoms could signal a number of different engine and/or trans problems. I'm hoping that the trans is not in its death throes, but its age and mileage ( over 100K) could very well be responsible.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem or perhaps suggest some
more common reasons for the conditions described.

Any imput would be appreciated,

Frank

sounds like a possible engine misfire...there's no codes you say...when was the last time you disconnected your battery??

Thanks for the response hundahunta - I don't have an engine code reader - but there is no engine check warning light before, during or after the slippage. Can't recall when the battery was last disconnected - will try it.
