160K miles and hydrolocked; at least it made it into the driveway.
This is what I've done: Read lots & lots of forum posts (thanks guys!). Took pictures & have service manuals. Pulled spark plugs (coolant came out) & cranked for 15 sec. Pulled UIM & verified EGR port issue - yeah I got it. Removed water from the top of the LIM. Ordered Dorman UIM 615-180 (has smaller LIM EGR tube). Ordered Fel-Pro MS95809-1 LIM gaskets (didn't know about aluminum ones when I ordered). Got the 2 coolant elbows from Dealer. Got some 5/16-18 & M6X1.0 bolts & nuts (help clean treads). Plan is to complete work this weekend, and have some questions. Noticed something on the threads of a LIM bolt - what do you recommend I use for re-assembly - thread lock or thread sealer? Specifically what brand of thread lock or thread sealer (that I can easily pick up at local parts store)? After repairs - Plan to change oil & filter, idle for 15 min and change oil & filter again. Plan to change oil & filter after 500 miles. Is any of the above silly? What have I missed? Any other tips or suggestions? My main concerns are if coolant has damaged bearings or if rod(s) are bent. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks a bunch in advance. |

Re: Intrigue '99 3.8L Series II UIM & LIM Prep Questions
Your post is probably better in the main portion of the forum. I also hope for your sake that you didnt do any major damage. If your going to run the car for 5 minutes and change the oil again, you might as well add some seafoam to the crankcase during the first initial run. I have no idea about thread lock/sealer. I have usually just replaced the bolts which came with new sealer/locker already applied.
BTW a friend of mine had this SAME thing happen to his bonne with the 3800 II. It was missing badly and he had to keep the rpm's up in order for it to not die. When he got home and shut it off, it would not start, not even turn over (hydrolocked). He tore it down and found that he had filled his cylinders with coolant. Upon replacing the UIM manifold and LIM and UIM gaskets, the car ran great. No more issues, no wiped bearings or bent rods. Just a little reassurance (I hope). Good Luck!
