Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec II Restoration Project W.I.P.

Hey all. This was one of my first models I've attempted two years ago and as you can see, it was pretty.......well......unsatisfactory. So I've decided to strip the paint off, redo some assembly points, repaint the rims since some paint "bled", redo the CF decals and other minor things.

So far, this is how it looks like right now. I'm going to start taking it apart starting tomorrow and some paint thinner.

Hopefully I'll finish this build along with my other Skyline GT-R builds I'm doing at the moment in here. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=914339

Re: Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec II Restoration Project W.I.P.

I need help! Does anyone know what to use to help take the paint off? My paint thinner doesn't do anything. Is there a certain type of alcohol you guys use to take the paint off?

Re: Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec II Restoration Project W.I.P.

Try soaking it 24-48 hrs in SuperClean. It should then come off with a light scrub from an old toothbrush. After the paint has been removed remember to wash the model to make sure there isn't any "stripper" left on it. I've used this method on a couple kits that I messed up the paint on.

Re: Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec II Restoration Project W.I.P.

First off what type of paint did you use is it a Acr-Acrylic Based, Enamel Based or Lacquer based? From what you said about using a type of alcohol it should be the Acr type. I don't know about some thing called SuperClean but blwnrtr93 is right that you should soaking it for 24 up to 48hrs and use an old tooth brush to clean off the paint but you do need to know that you may have to keep trying to soak the body till you get all the old paint off. Now remember stoping after just one soaking will not help you have to repeat it some times. To get it to come out right.

May I ask how mini cote's of Primer did you use as well as white and clear? Some time if the paint cotes are thick it may take some time or days to get all the paint off. Now if you used an Enamel clear over the Arc paint you would need to get that Enamel paint off first with Enamel Thinner and then us the alcohol to get the white off.

But first we need you to tell us just wich types of paint you use.

Re: Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec II Restoration Project W.I.P.

^ I just remembered. I just sprayed white primer over it. It's the type of paint you use for outdoor type. So it's acrylic primer. Then I sprayed it with clear. If I can't take the paint off cleanly, I might have to buy a new one. I also have another R34, and I used Tamiya TS-17. What type of alcohol should I use for that?

95% up to 100% Rubbing alcohol, you know the stuff you have in the "bathroom" or in your First aid kit. I know that sounds silly but one thing I have learned from building Military Models is what to use to strip off Arc-types of paint. Try that and let me know what the results are.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubbing_alcohol
I use this type but the label is Pink for the [95%] and Gray I think for the [100%]

Re: Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec II Restoration Project W.I.P.

^ Thanks for the feedback. I've dipped the body in alcohol with the lid sealed on for four days. The paint just peeled off and the rest I had to scrape it off. I might have to dip it again since some of the grey primer didn't come off with it. Other than that, it just needs some good old sanding and some elbow grease. I'll post pics how it looks after the paint peeled off.

Re: Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec II Restoration Project W.I.P.

Here's the first step of stripping the paint off. Had it setting in 91% alcohol for four days, the paint just peeled off. Need to sand it down with 600 grit to get rid of the primer that didn't come off.

Looks like how a car would look after a acid dip.

Re: Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec II Restoration Project W.I.P.

Alright, it's finally done. I'm pretty satisfied with the result, minus the problem I encountered with the CF hood (my dad ruined it, a whole new story), and for no apparent reason, I lost some parts. When I find the parts somewhere, I'll put them on, but in the mean time, tell me what you guys think.
