CF Hood Clear coat
I got quoted from the same shop that's doing the frame around $150 to sand and clear coat the CF hood. Is that a good price? They said they've never redone one before. Either just installed them or painted to match car. Good deal, or should I get more prices?

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
Sounds a bit high, you might want to get another quote to compare.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
$150 to sand AND clear the hood? If they pay for the clear, that's a damn good price. Exactly what kind of sanding are they gonna do, are they gonna sand past the original "clear" and re-apply a new coat or are they just gonna scuff and spray over top of the existing one? Either way that's a pretty good deal granted they pay for the clear, just the labor on that would be more than $150 at any reputable shop.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
My guess is they will just give the hood a good wet sand. It wont take that much clear to spray a few coats on it.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
Ya they said wet sand the entire hood down and apply the coat then. Will ask about it again later, IF they finish my car today.

What's wrong with your hood that you want it re-cleared?

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
Got a used CF hood. The clear coat is coming off along the drivers side, like peeling off and it's a good amount. If the front end is being rebuilt, I want the hood looking good too.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
Is it an actual clear coat or is it a clear gel coating used to set-up the CF? If it's actual clear coat you'll be able to save it, but sanding down that gel shit sometimes causes more problems than you fix, but it'd be hard to tell without seeing it in person.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
I can peel it right off. The actual clear 'plastic' or whatever is over the actual CF is still there. It's just the very very top thin piece. I'll try to get a good pic of it later.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
I didn't know the hood needed to be fixed first. I assumed it was in good shape and just needed more protection. That price might not be to bad.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
Is it a VIS hood? Because all there hoods seem to have a problem with clear coat. Whenever I get one (not sure which brand) I'm gonna put like 5 coats of hardcore wax on it as soon as I put it on.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
It sounds like a good price to me...I'd pay it if I needed this done.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
I know they all come off. I'm going to bring it in to the same shop that did the front and see what they say again. Actually bring the hood in and have them check it out.

Re: CF Hood Clear coat
Its not the epoxy resin that holds the CF together is it?

Dave, if you can pull off "chunks", then it's probably not clearcoat, clearcoat is less than paper thin and doesn't really flake unless it's a REALLY REALLY shitty job. |
