Hills With 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport

My question is :
When decending extremely long steep hills' can you use gear
1/2 to maintain control of speed on decending this hill without overheating tranny. I mean useing 1/2 for extended distance on a very steep hill thats decends for quite aways. 3rd gear doesn,t seem to control roll speed enough when going down hill. Drive decends to fast and have to ride brakes to much. Same with 3rd gear.

Talking about hills in moutainess area,s of Pennslyvania where we deer hunt.

I do.

I also have an external transmission cooler. I also monitor my temperature gage most of the time when off road.

I also raise the hood whenever I stop when we go off-roading.
