Transmission delays

Please help. I have an automatic transmission. When I start the engine and shift to Drive, it takes a couple of seconds (too long) before the clutch engages. Sometimes I will shift to 2nd to begin moving the Xterra then I shift to Drive.

What is happening to my transmission?

Thank you in advance.

Re: Transmission delays

DID YOU CHECK YOUR TRANSMISSION OIL? Is it brown or is the level low?

Re: Transmission delays

The oil level is fine and the oil is not brown.

It seems to have this problem when it cools down. After it warms up , I have no problem.

Re: Transmission delays

I also have this problem with my 2000 Xterra. It has done this ever since I bought the vehicle several years ago. Also, sometimes the shifts are nice and solid, but other times it seems to shift real sloppy almost like it is wanting to slip. The only thing is that it seems to be completely random. It doesn't matter if the engine is cold or warm. Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, how did you correct it? I have followed my maintenance schedule religiously and have always changed the fluids according to the manual stated intervals. Someone please help?
