Help--97 G Caravan, clicks but no start.

This just started a week ago. Turn the key and all the lights and accessories fire up normal. Turn Key forward to start and all we get is a 'click'. Backoff on the key and all the accessories are back on. Turn the key more times and eventually it will start. Sometimes three, sometimes ten times will do it. Sometimes it will start right up.
My thoughts are the starter solenoid. My question, is that correct? Where is it located and is it a fairly simple fix if I block it up and yank the thing myself? I am fairly mechanical and have been involved with other repairs. How much work will it be or should I send it in and pay the money? Thanks!!

The starter solenoid is located on the starter so the starter will need to be removed. If memory serves the starter on this vehicle is easy to get to as it is in the front of the engine. Make sure that when you remove it that you unhook the battery first.

Before tearing the starter out, however, check a few more items. First check the battery terminals and grounds on the vehicle. Make sure they are clean and in good shape. Second, check the wiring on the solenoid to make sure everything is tight. You may find it is easier to do this than replace the starter solenoid and you may not have to after all.

Re: Help--97 G Caravan, clicks but no start.

thanks for the confirmation. The Battery and Positive terminial end are new, cleaned and greased up nicely. Battery died on me a month ago. I will check the connections first which is a good idea. Otherwise, a starter job is staring me in the face this Saturday. Thanks
Can anyone confirm the starter location on a 97 Dodge Grand Caravan. 3.3L Auto Trans? Thanks

The starter is about in the center of the van, across from the engine oil filter. There are 2 bolts holding it on. Disconnect the battery/wiring first. You can rebuild the solenoid very easily. It is much cheaper than a rebuilt/new unit. Here is some info, but I haven't personally dealt with them.

Nippondenso Starter Parts/ Repair Scroll down for instructions.

88 Toyota Starter Rebuild because we have a similar starter and he did a nice job of presenting the info.

I get my repair parts from a local starter motor re-builder. That may/may not exist where you are. I don't know if NAPA has rebuild kits but they're a phone call away. The hard part of this fix is in removing/re-installing the starter motor, not the repair. If it makes you feel better...you can always rattle-can the outside so it will look like a rebuild.

You get at it from under the van. It's on the front center of the engine slightly towards the drivers side.
